Fave Five Friday - Guilty Pleasures

August 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Much love to C to tha G for this one, aka Chicken Grease. It’s a good one, even though I’m not sure if I can even think of 5 for myself. Haha! Anyway, how about it? Let’s celebrate Fave Five Friday together by posting your “Guilty Pleasures” list below! Holla!

  1. The Hills - the future brother in law gives me heat for watching this with the lady and his gf (while giggling in our pjs), but it’s pretty addicting now that I know the story behind these peeps. Haha!
  2. Flavor of Love - this show is such utter nonsense, but I love it! It’s sad/depressing that he (supposedly) won’t be doing any more.
  3. Toppo - you know that stick like snack from Japan filled with chocolate in the middle? Mmmmm!
  4. Dixie Chicks - I actually dig on country music in general. Yee haw!
  5. Boxer Briefs - Not even sure if this counts as a guilty pleasure, but cut me some slack, I’m reaching here. Hehe! Anyway, no to boxers and a hella no to tighty whiteys (sp?), so where better to settle than in between? Comfort with support. Loves it!

Well, there you have it. Way more of me than you cared to know. Don’t leave me hangin’ and make me look like the only crazy one out thurr. Spill the beans yo!

Have a nice weekend y’all!

P.S. In other news, ex porn queen Jenna Jameson is reportedly preggers from boyfriend and MMA fighter Tito Ortiz. I’ll bite my tongue and leave the smart comments to you folks… Also, Ortiz has reportedly signed with Affliction and may be on their October card FYI. Thoughts?

Brett to Jet Set

August 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Dammit!

I had this quirky lil’ blog post about Brett Favre set to publish tonight at midnight, and then he had to go and get traded. Ruin my whole post why don’t you B Fav? Now I gotta pretty much re-write the whole thing in the present tense so I don’t sound like an out of it sports guy. Oh well, at least I’m near a computer tonight where I can edit this buggah to da max.

What am I babbling about? After months of back and forth, the Green Bay Packers finally sent Brett Favre a packin’, in a trade to the New York Jets.

Woah.

What does this mean exactly? Well, curtains for Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens for one. For another, we’ll no longer associate B Fav (you heard that nickname here first… don’t touch! :P ) entirely with the Kaimuki High like, green and gold/yellow. He’ll still be donning green, but in a darker shade with white.

How did we get to this point?

…after B Fav all but retired after last season via a teary-eyed press conference? Well, he decided that retirement was not for him. I can kinda see/empathize with both sides:

* Green Bay: They’ve drafted and made roster moves, thinking Brett wasn’t going to be a part of their future. They’ve got a young stud Quarterback in Aaron Rodgers whom they’d like to get a good look at before deciding his contractual future. They’re just trying to move on.

* Brett Favre: He’s a competitor. He’s still got the itch. He knows he can still compete at this level.

Talk to me!

  • Who you siding wit’?
    • For me, I kinda side with the Packers on this one. I’m all about being a man of your word and doing what you say you’re going to do, so it’s hard for me to side with Brett.
  • Thoughts on seeing Favre in a Jets uni?
    • I’m neither a Packers or a Jets fans, so I look at it from a strictly Fantasy Football point of view. The idea of having Brett Favre on my fantasy roster instead of duds Chad Pennington and/or Kellen Clemens, is pretty scrumptious if you “axe” me. Wide Receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery (and even TE Chris Baker and RB Thomas Jones for that matter) get a big boost as well. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. *rubs hands together*
  • For the ladies who read this blog… Is Brett Favre still a hottie to you?
    • Guys don’t look at other guys like that.

Hopefully, there are some sports/football nuts out thurr who will comment/discuss this below for poor, lonely me… Hollaatchoboy! *grin*

August 5th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

OK, the start of another themed post… EATS! Short for Ed Always Tastes Stuffs… unless you can think of something better. Haha! Basically, it’ll be photos of good kine eats around town. Today, we’ll post some shots from the kinda new bar (opened in May) on Keeaumoku Street Champions Sports Bar & Grill. Enjoy!

Prices weren’t the greatest, but errthang was pretty good and tasty nonetheless. A pleasant surprise as the boys and I went here on a whim. The pork chops was a bit salty though. The bathrooms were nice/clean (a good way to tell if a place is kept well), and the interior was still shiny/new. There was even a side area with dartboards and a pool table. Small and big TVs lined the walls, making it a good place to catch a game, which is probably why during playoff games, the parking lot is always PACKED!

Portuguese Bean Soup Weekend

August 4th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

After watching an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I got inspired to give this cooking thing a try. Cooking, like real estate, is one of those things I feel I would be good at if I gave it a go. You know how you just have that feeling? Anyway…

After scooping a top secret(?) Portuguese Bean Soup recipe from a couple of co-workers (mahalos to Matt and Lance!), the lady and I took it (and the “ingredaments”) to the parentals’ crib yesterday afternoon to try it out. They summoned me to help them set up their wireless network, so in exchange, I “borrowed” their pots, pans and electricity to do the deed. :P

It got rave reviews, but I’d still like to perfect it, especially the process. Buggah took hours upon hours to finish. *sigh*

Now I know I can’t get outta here without sharing the recipe and/or some shots of the dish, so I will duly oblige. But since I don’t know how top secret the co-workers’ recipe is, I’ll protect my life and type up a generic one modified from a recipe the lady has in a book.

1-2 pounds smoked ham hock
2 cans kidney beans
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
3 cans beef broth
2 cans tomato sauce
3 large potatoes, cut into cubes
4 carrots, cut into cubes
1 Portuguese sausage
1 head cabbage

(In the voice of Aunty Marialani) In a large pot, place the ham hocks, kidney beans, garlic and onions, and cover with water. Simmer for approximately 2 hours (skim off fat while cooking). Pull out ham hocks, strip meat off bones, and replace in pot. Dispose of bones. Add the rest of the ingredients (except cabbage) and simmer for 1-2 more hours. Add cabbage and cook until soft and part of soup. Optionally: add elbow macaroni.

The ingredaments for step 2
The “ingredaments” for step 2

Photo of soup cold (yeah, I forgot to take it hot)

Talk to me:
* Any tips or secrets on how to make your Portuguese Bean Soup a winnah?
* Any recipes of your own to share for the married couple to be?
* How did you spend your weekend?

Have a happy Monday y’all!

Mario Kart Me!

August 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

You’ve seen ‘em errwhere. From lil’ kids to full-blown adults. Staring mightily and intently into the little Nintendo DS screen.

Depending on your age and level of pop culture expertise, some of the questions you may’ve asked yourself were:

* “What is that… a cell phone?” (old as dirt)
* “What are they doing?”(slightly younger but still out of it)
* “Should I have one of those to?” (a little more downtown julie brown)
* “What Multiplayer Group are they in and I wonder if I can join in!?” (hip and in the know)

The game is Mario Kart and it’s the fastest growing sensation in Hawaii, well, at least in my experiences. Different groups of my friends do it. Random people I talk to do it. Readers of this blog do it! I’ve finally come to this realization when (as I mentioned in a previous post) a random guy in the movie theater yelled to the crowd to join his Mario Kart Multiplayer Group, and, you know what, people did! To illustrate just how amazing this is, quite a few things have to be in place for this to even come close to happening.

  1. They had to have brought their DS
  2. They had to have had the game Mario Kart
  3. They had to have had some level of knowledge of a) how to play the game and b) how to connect to another DS via Multiplayer mode

Simply amazing. Next time I go to the movie, I’m packing my DS just in case. :P

New welcome screen means I play too much!
New welcome screen means I play too much!

Talk to me!
* Which character/kart combo do you like to use?
* Know any shortcuts?
* Know any secret codes/cheats?
* Care to share any other secrets to help me get better?
* What other games do you like to play on your DS?

Shoots! Have a happy Sunday yo!

Aloha Slammers

August 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Last night, the curtain closed on another Kalakauan classic. Slammers, the popular sports bar/good eats joint closed its doors to the public at this location. The good news is that it it only temporary as they prepare to re-open under the name Kanpai Bar & Grill on Ward Avenue (across Sports Authority where the old Dixie Grill and more recently Tio’s used to be). Those who frequented Slammers for the past 3 years, came for one last night of drinks and good times. See the scenes below. Go and support Kanpai Bar & Grill when they re-open k? They are currently targeting early September.

Açai in Ha-wa-ii - Part I

August 1st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Road Runner Hawaii Columns

With the hot summer months upon us, there’s no better way to cool off than with an ice cold, refreshing treat. And since we’ve already covered some of the more popular shave ice joints across the state why not go with the latest health trend in Ha-wa-ii… Açai!?

Açai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee), is a small, berry-like fruit that grows on the Açai Palm native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Most popular in Brazil (cumprimentos!), it is widely known to be an uber healthy superfruit, carrying with it powerful antioxidants, amino acids and essential fibers and fatty acids. Heck, Oprah even gives it the thumbs up, and we all know that her word is gospel. *grin*

Today, you can find Açai all over Hawaii (and the United States for that matter) in juices, frozen fruit bars, vitamin supplements, chocolates, and most commonly in frozen smoothies known as an Açai cup or bowl. This month, we’ll explore the places around Oahu that serve up this special treat. Excelente!

Blue Hawaii Lifestyle

Located on the second floor of the new Nordstrom wing of Ala Moana Center, this health specialty store doubles as a juice bar/café, serving packaged foods, coffees, teas, fresh-made juices and even books and music.

For $6.75, you can enjoy their Small Açai Bowl topped with bananas, berries, honey and granola ($8.75 for the regular size), which, incidentally is their number one seller.

Ed’s Tip: Unless you’re a monstah eater, a small bowl should suffice as a snack for two peeps.

IMG_6258.JPG
Small Açai Bowl topped with bananas, berries, honey - $6.75

The presentation was just as good as the taste. Loved the use of fresh fruits and their surplus of granola!

According to PR point person Matt Olson and founder/CEO Michael Zhang, Blue Hawaii LifeStyle plans to expand to mainland China by the fourth quarter of 2009. “Beginning in Shanghai’s Xintiandi Shopping Center, we will continue the expansion to Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, bringing our concept of the active, healthy lifestyle found here in Hawaii to a new demographic.”

A great way to start guys…

Diamond Head Cove Health Bar

This surf-vibed, smoothie/salad bar is located on Monsarrat Ave and features an assortment of smoothies, juices, salads and wraps.

IMG_6433.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar

Most of their ingredients are local, including the fresh fish used in their salad and wraps. They also serve traditional organic Hawaiian Awa, three types of Açai treats (which is why we’re here! :P ) and have live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

But enough about that… let’s get to the Açai baby! They have three of ‘em (two bowls and one smoothie), which includes the Da Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Granola & honey for $7.50), the Mana Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Blueberries, Granola, Beepollen & Honey for $9.25), and the Açai Smoothie (Açai Bananas, Strawberries, Mixberries for $7).

IMG_6434.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar inside menu

A slight word of caution. There may be some discrepancies between the menu outside and the menu inside (which I hope they’ve fixed by now), so inquire within. Based on what I read inside, I was hoping to get “Mixberries” with my Da Cove Bowl, but was disappointed when it didn’t have any. On the way out, I read the board outside which did not list any berry besides strawberries (twice!).

IMG_6439.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar outside menu

The presentation wasn’t the greatest, likely due to the mad rush (see below), but the taste was pretty good nonetheless. It probably could’ve used a little more granola and a little less honey though.

IMG_6444.JPG
Da Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Granola & honey) - $7.50

Ed’s Tip: Try to avoid the peak times here. Besides the very limited parking situation outside, they can get really busy up in hurr. We came when there was a big crowd and a shift change taking place, so they actually forgot/misplaced our order. :(

Jamba Juice

And finally… what’s a discussion about Açai without a mention of the mother of all smoothie hotspots: Jamba Juice!?

IMG_6272.JPG
Jamba Juice Mililani

Introduced statewide right after Christmas last year, Jamba Juice’s Açai Cup is blended with pure Açai concentrate and soymilk, combined with bananas, strawberries and blueberries, and topped with organic granola and fresh bananas.

Here’s a close-up of the actual Açai portion of the smoothie:

Here’s the much prettier, PR version of the Açai Cup. Dayem, those photographers are gooood! :)

My first exposure to the sweet Brazilian treat was actually via Jamba Juice’s Açai Cup. After tasting the way the other places do it though, I’m secretly hoping that they start drizzling honey over the top of theirs one day. :)

Jamba recently added two new drinks to their “Meal in a Cup” lineup: the Hawaiian Açai Cup, which blends Açai concentrate, mangos and guava juice and topped with organic granola and fresh bananas (Sixteen $5.25/Original $6.25), and the Chunky PB ‘n Jamba, a thick blend of soymilk, vanilla yogurt, organic peanut butter, strawberries, blueberries & organic granola and then topped with more blueberries (Twelve $4.50/Sixteen $5.25).

The Hawaiian Acai is a spin-off of the original Acai Cup substituting guava juice and mangos instead of soymilk, blueberries and strawberries. The Chunky PB `n Jamba is a continuation to the delicious Chunky Strawberry which replaces the bananas with blueberries.

I know it’s not Açai, but since I got it recently, here’s a closeup of the Chunky PB ‘n Jamba FYI.

IMG_6373.JPG
Chunky PB ‘n Jamba closeup

Chunky Strawberry is the final “Meal in a Cup” drink in their arsenal. It blends strawberries, bananas, peanut butter, yogurt, soymilk, and organic granola and is topped with fresh bananas (Sixteen $5.25/Original $6.25).

Ed’s Tip: Stick with the traditional Açai Cup. My cubicle mate and I have both tried the Hawaiian Açai and though it’s good, we still prefer the original da bes’!

Since everyone’s probably already been to Jamba at least once in their lives, I had to inquire within to find a gem for you valued readers. One little undiscovered morsel that will come in handy next time we all go.

Enter Marketing Director Sheri Rigg. “One thing customers may not know is that ANY smoothie on the menu can be customized to their taste preferences, nutritional needs, etc. They can swap out fruits in the recipe, change the consistency of the smoothie (e.g. make it thicker), or add ingredients or nutritional boosts. All the new products mentioned above include organic granola made with flax and pumpkin seed. Customers really LOVE the granola and can top any smoothie with this granola or have it blended within to create a thicker consistency. Topping their favorite smoothie with additional fruit is also delicious!”

Sounds like a little “Have It Your Way” action if you ask me. Yes, I know that’s another company’s slogan, but you catch my drift. I think I’m gonna try that next time. I’m gonna customize my Açai cup with more blueberries, less strawberries. And maybe I’ll bring a bottle of my own honey. :)

Jamba Juice Hawaii
Numerous Locations (store locator)

Well, that’s it for part 1. Next month, we’ll hit up Lanikai Juice, Jewel or Juice and Wedding Café for more from the world of Açai in Ha-wa-ii. Adeus!
