How Geeks Do Blackouts

December 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Computers & WWW, Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Yeah, I know, I’m shmall kine late with the blackout report, but I figgah since errbody else already blogged about it up in here, I’d try to present a different angle for all y’all, 3 days aftah da fact. *grin*

Now I don’t consider myself a geek by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have geeky tendencies. LOL! Below, you’ll find what one pseudo-geek did to pass the time of what literally turned out to be “Black” Friday.

Unless you make your home far far away, I don’t have to tell you what happened to most of us during Friday’s fiasco. What I do want to tell you (and what I also want to hear from you) is how we (you) spent our (your) day battling the dark “night”. Get it? Pretty good play on words eh? *patting self on back* Anyway…

The night started with some false alarms. The flickering of the lights. Some subtle hints warning of the impending doom, er gloom, ah, blackout. Wifey and I rushed to get our dinner a-cookin’, but the electric gods were not with us.

*POOF*

Power be gone!

Ain’t no thang. We were kinda mentally prepared for it actually. But it did suck, as, I’m sure it did for the rest of us. (One story I heard was of those stuck in the “Bodies” exhibition when the power went out. That must’ve been nuts yeah!? Talk about real life haunted house! LOL!).

Thanks to all of the candy and treats our friends, family and neighbors gave to us for the holidays, we pretty much had a jubilee of options for a replacement meal. And although Chex snack mix is not the ideal meal, we at least had 30 days worth in case the power didn’t come back for another month. :P

With no electricity, there was no form of entertainment to speak of. Like errone else, TV, Internet and Phone were all down, so we were reduced to working on our Thank You cards under candlelight (My eyes are still burning). 8)

When the vision started to go and the fumes from the marker became too much, I took periodic “Virus Buster” breaks on the trusty DS. Staring at a bright screen in pitch black darkness however, is not so guaranz balbaranz, so I had to take a break from taking a break, naw-mean? So it was off to find the next thang to do. Hmm, let’s check the Internet on my phone…

Awww yeeeeeaaaaah!

Da buggah works!

So what do I do? I check my email, read my feeds on Google Reader, do a lil’ bit of Facebook, and then pop on to Twitter.

WOAH!

Note to self (and others): Twitter, during island-wide blackouts, is the place to be son!

Thanks to the (Hawaii) Twitter community sending constant updates about their situations and the news they’ve gathered from others, I was not in the dark, while in the dark, if you know what I mean. I was able to piece together what was happening all ova the island without electricity and witout moving a muscle (except the ones in my thumb). Apparently, the Hawaii blackout related messages (marked with “#hipower”) was the number one tracked term on Twitter search at the time. Pretty amazing.

I gotsta give mad props to @johngarcia (John Garcia from the Advertiser), @hawaii (Ryan Ozawa), @KGMB9 (Jared Kuroiwa is that you?), and a few others for holding it down and keeping many of us afloat when we were looking for something, anything.

The next morning, the power was still not back for us “Milsville” peeps, so it was time for more geekiness. We busted out the ol’ crank radio to listen to Perry (on the left) and Price (on the right) on KSSK to find out what the dealio was, and mixed in a few more rounds of DS and Twitter for good measure…

Funniest quote of the day (from wifey): *pouts* “I’m washing dishes for food we didn’t even eat!”

Talk to me!
* Is that geeky enough for you? Were you even geekier than me?
* How did you end up spending your night/day?
* What area do you live and what time did your power end up coming back on at?
* Any other thoughts or feedback on the blackout or weather in general?

Holla!

If I Only Had a Beard

December 23rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

It’s been a while since I’ve written a “real” random blog, so let’s give it a try eh?

In these final few days leading up to Christmas, I’ve had my fair share of sightings of the big guy in red. Seeing that jolly fella, and his flowy white work of art always made me wonder why I can’t, for the life of me, grow more than “scraps” on my chinny chin chin.

Errone always tells me that I should be thankful that I don’t have to shave errday, but I dismiss that with a pout. You see, I’ve been blessed with baby’s butt cheek syndrome… and I hate it.

Whenever I see you peeps with beards, goatees or even sideburns, I get j. Even if I let myself go for two weeks (which I’ve done on trips mind you), all I come up with is some sorry excuse for stubbles – above and below my lips – that would make Tom Selleck wet himself from laughing so hard.

Look Out Abe Lincoln! Hurr comes Ed!
Look Out Abe Lincoln! Hurr comes Ed!

The people who tell me I should be thankful are probably right, but I just want the option, nawmean? I want to be able to wake up one day and say, “Hmm… this week, let’s go for a Rollie Fingers stache, or the Kimbo Slice beard, or Dylan McKay 90210-esque sideburns!” The only options I have now are clean-shaven or a little dirt on my lips.

Sad yeah?

Talk to me:
* Should I be thankful?
* My hairless bruthas, does this curse last forever? (Will I one day be able to shave a monster beard?)
* My hairy bruthas, ain’t it great?
* Do beards keep you warm in cold weather or sweat in hot weather?
* Ladies, are your husbands/boyfriends/potentials hairy? Do you wish they weren’t? Is it a turn on or turn off?
* Ladies, are you going to slap me cause I, at least, don’t have to worry about my other body parts? :P

Happy Tuesday y’all!

The Man Rules

December 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Jokes

Happy Monday folks. Hope your weekend was filled with fun and laughter. Let’s continue that loving laughing feeling with a hilarious joke email. Got this one from my softball manager/coach. Pretty funny stuffs! Let us know which is your favorite! Enjoy!

P.S. And remember… No get mad at the messenger k?

===

FINALLY, the guys’ side of the story.
We always hear “THE RULES” from the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side.

These are our rules!
Please note.. these are all numbered “1 ”
ON PURPOSE!

1.   Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Sunday sports It’s like the full moon or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem ONLY if you want help solving it. That’s what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become Null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you’re fat, you probably are. Don’t ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one

1. You can either ask us to do something OR tell us how you want it done. Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say “nothing,” We will act like nothing’s wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don’t want an answer to, Expect an answer you don’t want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine… Really.

1. Don’t ask us what we’re thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball
or golf.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round IS a shape!

Thank you for reading this.

Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight; But did you know men really don’t mind that? It’s like camping.

Pass this to as many men as you can – to give them a laugh.

Pass this to as many women as you can - to give them a bigger laugh.

Wedding Day Recap – Part I

December 15th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Music

As some of you may know, my friend Noreen made global, national, state, island, city, November-weddings-in-Honolulu-Hawaii history by live-Twittering our wedding for us. Using her “play-by-play” as the framework, I’ll interject my personal commentary and some photos I’ve received from others to help give y’all a feel for our big day. I promise, after this, you’ll never have to hear another word from me about my wedding (sorry!)… That is, until I finish it up in part 2 tomorrow! :P

First, let’s rewind a bit to the night before. Being a member of several bridal parties myself, the night before the wedding is an exciting, anxious, and memorable time. It’s the last time you’ll ever be with your boys as a single man. Though unspoken, there is a certain “this is it” feeling in the air and errone knows it. My night-before-the-wedding outing was no different.

Kelvin, Bari and I checked into the hotel in the late afternoon. Since Grant and Tommy wouldn’t be joining us ’til later (Tommy was flying in that afternoon and Grant offered to pick him up after work) I presented Kelvin and Bari their bridal party gifts early: a Reyn Spooner Aloha Shirt, a customized NBA T-shirt and a new Spalding indoor/outdoor basketball. After chillin’ for a bit, we headed to the BJ Penn/Georges St.-Pierre media event happening at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. There, Grant and Tommy met us and, after the event finished, we headed towards the back for a special V.I.P. Meet and Greet with the fighters!

What an amazing experience (much love to “Big Wave” Dave Jackson and the rest of the UFC crew!)!

Fave Five Friday – Favorite Organizational Tips

December 12th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Here’s a suggestion from everyone’s favorite Chicken Grease:

Fave’ five organizational tips — something to share with all, you know, like a public service, heh.  I actually don’t have problems with organization, but, I’m always interested in learning new stuff about it.

If this one gets a lot of action in the comment area below, it was actually my suggestion. If not, we’ll blame it all on the Ceeg! :P Comment either way k?

I’m the furthest thing from being very organized, but here’s my feeble attempt at a fave five list on this topic. Maybe you can help a brutha out and offer your more sound advice. Much love!

  1. Buy storage bins and folders… and use um!
  2. Don’t wait ’til it’s out of control/unmanageable
  3. Set a time for spring cleaning and stick to it.
  4. Stickers, tabs, pens, etc. I guess those would help too. :P
  5. Don’t be a pack rat to begin with. Organize as the junk comes in.

There you have it. Professional organizational tips from a very non-professional, non-organized person! Helllllp!

Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

December 9th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

Sorry gang! I tried to work on that wedding recap blog, but quickly realized that it’s gonna take some time for that one. Maybe next week? *blush*

In the meantime, I thought I’d talk about the tradition of “Banzai” at Hawaii weddings, and how ours went over. Four words: HI-LA-RI-OUS!

According to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s web site, the significance of the Banzai toast is as follows:

The word banzai literally means “10,000 years” and is associated with long life. Banzai cheers are given at joyous occasions, banquets and gatherings, to express congratulations, encouragement, or celebration. Traditionally, the participants shout the word “banzai” three times in unison, raising their hands in the air each time.

It is customary to deliver two separate banzai cheers at weddings. The first, “Shinro shimpu, banzai!” means “long life and happiness to the bride and groom.” The second banzai is: “Raihin shoku, banzai!” or, more politely, “Raihin no minasama, banzai!” This banzai cheer means “Long life and happiness to all the guests!” In Hawaii, these wedding banzai cheers are often given as a special toast, with participants raising their glasses with each shout of “banzai!”

In my personal experience, I’ve noticed that the “Shinro Shinpu” one is usually done by a friend, and symbolizes good luck from the guests to the bride and groom. The “Raihin no minasan” one seems to usually be done by a family member and is to the guests.

I sound unsure because when I asked my parents (who are straight from the muthaland mind you) about the history of this tradition, they were baffled. It seems this tradition is not done at weddings in Japan.

So on to our banzai. If I had one tip to offer future to-be-wed peeps, pit two competitive friends against each other. It will make for an interesting challenge to them and an entertaining banzai for all.

One was the brother-in-law, and the other was his (and my) good friend. Before the wedding was even here, they were trash talking to each other as to whose banzai would be better. Following the wedding was no different. They were boasting about their own banzai and how junk the other guy’s one was.

As to who won, it depends on who’s asking. If it’s the BIL, he won. If it’s his/my friend, he won. If they both ask at the same time, it was a tie! :P

Dave's Banzai Lee's Banzai

Both were hilarious as heck and we were definitely glad we chose them to do our Banzais. Much love to Dave and Lee! “Banzai, Banzai, Banzaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiii!”

Talk to me!
* Any funny banzai stories to share from your wedding or other weddings you’ve been to?
* Anything to add about the banzai tradition?
* Anyone else from Japan who can speak to this tradition in Japanese weddings?
* Ever did a banzai for a friend’s wedding? (this means they think you’re loud BTW ;) ) How’d it go?
* Did you use the banzai tradition at your wedding?
* Gonna use this at your wedding in the future?
