Survey Thursday – BJ Penn or Georges St. Pierre?

January 29th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA, Random, Travel

* Who are you picking to win at UFC 94: BJ Penn or Georges St. Pierre?

These two bruthas are arguably the best pound for pound MMA fighters in history and they will be facing off this Saturday in Las Vegas for the UFC Welterweight Championship (again). Penn is a local boy from Hilo and has a HUGE following both in Hawaii as well as in the MMA community. St. Pierre is an athletic stud from Canada and is loved by the more mainstream/every day fan. Women especially swoon over him for his physique. Which side are you on for this one man?

Me? I gotta go with our local boy Penn. Not only is he from our aina, but he is unbelievably talented in the art of combat, and makes me crack up in every interview he does. I just love it that people outside of Hawaii are also huge fans of his. Represent baby!

What Attracts You to the Opposite Sex?

January 27th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

In yesterday’s Seven Things Meme post, rayboyjr shared something interesting about himself:

A woman’s eyes are what I notice first and is the most impressionable feature on a woman. At least to me. A nice smile and a bat of the eye will get me all the time!

That got me to thinkin’ (yeah, rare moment). We’re all attracted to different things in the opposite sex. Some like physical attributes like legs or arms, and others are drawn to personality traits like confidence or sense of humor.

Me? Now that I’m married, I don’t look anymore ;) but if I were single and still looking, I’d say I’m a sucker for a smile and warm/kind heart (thoughtfulness).

What say you yo?

Seven Things Meme

January 26th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Bruddah Ryan recently tagged me in his “Seven Things Meme” blog, which basically obligated me to return the favor.

What the heck is a meme you “axe”? Yeah, that’s exactly what I “axed” myself. So I looked da buggah up. Basically, it is a term used to describe a joke, link, digital file, video clip, etc. that spreads quickly from person to person via the Internet.

The thinking behind posting it up in hurr (on WWE), is that it would also be a good way for us to get to know each other a lil’ better. You can read my “Seven Things” meme, and then post your own seven in the comment area below. Hopefully, it’ll help our WWE `ohana get to know each other just a little bit more. So let’s get this party started… Right!?

1) I dig on A Capella music.

There’s just something about perfect harmony that makes the hair on my neck/back stand up.

2) I HANDWRITE IN ALL CAPS

Not quite sure when this began, but it’s just something I do. Any handwriting analysts out there? ;)

3) My favorite brand name is eS. Duh!

It’s the hardest brand to find, but when I do, I go at it.

4) I am OBSESSED with Virus Buster from Brain Age 2.

The wife and I literally play this practically every day. We skip/breeze through the real brain exercises just to get to it. This YouTube video shows a guy happy to have a high score of 2059. Puhlease. Talk to me when you get in the 6,000s. *grin*

5) Rice and me get along (very well!).

For the amount of rice I down at errry meal, I’m surprised I’m not a sumo tori or competing in the Biggest Loser competition! Rice Rice Baby!

6) I could be quiet and soft spoken, or loud and obnoxious.

Just depends on the situation I guess. Who I’m with, where I’m at, how much I’ve had to drink… :P The last one was a joke (sorta), but am I alone on this one y’all?

7) I get thrilled (and feel proud) when people from Hawaii “make it” big.

Shane Victorino, BJ Penn, Barack Obama, Tadd Fujikawa… You name it, Hawaii’s got um baby!

Well, there ya have it. Info you probably could’ve lived without. But now it’s your turn. Post 7 odd/interesting/random/fun tidbits about yourself won’tcha?

Fave Five Friday – Must Have CDs (Desert Island edition)

January 23rd, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Music, Random

OK, so last week’s (Desert Island) DVD list seemed to be a pretty decent hit. We even got some lurkers to come out of shadows and post up in hurr. Woo hoo! Hopefully, this post will bring out more. C’mon y’all, don’t be scurred! :) This week, let’s go with the next logical list: CDs! Awwwww yeah!

So I don’t need to explain the rules right? Let’s get on with the show! Stuck? Get some help here or here.

  1. Dr. Dre – “The Chronic – Dre and Snoop Dogg at their best! Who wants to battle me in “Nuthin’ But A G Thang?” :P
  2. Shai – “…If I Ever Fall In Love” – Another classic! Used to listen to it going to bed errry night back in the day.
  3. Color Me Badd – “C.M.B. – My very first CD purchase (transitioning from cassette tapes)! This one got some miles one it!
  4. Anything Rockapella – These bruthas are insane! You might recognize them from their “Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego” song. Their vocal percussionist Jeff Thatcher is amazing (see video below). My dream is to one day see them in person.
  5. Anything Ka`au Crater Boys – Gotta bring the Hawaiian jams right? And who better than the starters of the ukulele craze (to the mainstream). Hopefully, I can bring my uke to the island too. :)

Honorable mentions go to Boyz II Men – “Cooleyhighharmony“, Dixie Chicks – “Wide Open Spaces” and/or “Fly“, R Kelly and Public Announcement – “Born Into the 90’s“, Brotherhood Creed – “BHC“, or Rick Astley – “Whenever You Need Somebody” (oh yeah! I went there!)!

Post yours below so I can see which classics I missed!

Have a happy Aloha Friday (and weekend) y’all! Shoots!

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – January 21, 2009

Two new faces - Paco and Ed Oshiro – got the correct answer to last week’s photo: Spaghettini in Haleiwa. Props to Paco, however, for being first. Good to see new participants up in hurr though. Welcome one and all. :)

For this week’s WIHES, let’s try another strictly food shot. It seemed to be a hit the last time we did it. Heck, anything will be better than yesterday’s comment count. Hahaha! Here ya go yo!

News Day Tuesday: January 20, 2009

Lots goin’ on in the world out dea folks.

We can talk about the obvious, like Bruddah Barack’s historic inauguration today (congrats Barack!), but we all know errbody and their mama will be talking about that up in hurr.

Lessee, we can gossip about American Idol, which will air its 3rd and 4th shows of the season today and tomorrow… but things won’t start gettin’ juicy until they go to Hollywood.

Or how about Tadd Fujikawa’s amazing Sony Open story? How he not only made the cut, but hung with the big boys and finished tied for 32nd!

We can even go old school and chit chat about MMA again. Affliction’s 2nd show, entitled “Day of Reckoning,” pits MMA deity Fedor Emelianenko against hard hitting, former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski this weekend.

Or what about Super Bowl talks, now that the two unlikely teams – The Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers – have been decided?

But why pick just one? It’s News Day Tuesday aftah all! How bout’ you decide which topic you wanna talk about and have at it. You can even pick your own newsworthy topic (not mentioned here) and gossip away. Holla! :)

I’ll start… and yeah, since I brought um all up, I’ll talk about um all.

* Barack Obama Inauguration

It’s gonna be another busy day at work, but I’ll try to sneak a peek every once in a while to catch history in the making. I’ll also be recording it at home. Doesn’t hurt that bruddah has ties to Hawaii and we claim him as our own. :)

* American Idol, Season 8

I used to be an avid fan, but the bad auditions are starting to get to me. I almost just want them to get to Hollywood already and get on with the show with the good singers. It’s been good to see many cultures and backgrounds getting through so far. Hopefully the diversity continues…

* Tadd Fujikawa at the Sony Open

I was there in 07 when Tadd burst onto the scene so it’s nice to see that he’s still holding it down. Bruddah’s not a one hit wonder. He’s in it to win it baby and ya just gotsta admire that! Goooo Tadd!

* Affliction Day or Reckoning

Top to bottom, this is yet another insane card, but for some reason, I’m not sure I have the urge to order it. Their first card was lukewarm for me, so I’m just afraid it will be the same. Ah, we’ll see. Really interested to see: Fedor vs. Arlovski (obviously!), Barnett vs. Yvel, Horodecki vs. Lauzon, Baby Fedor (Sidellnikov), Matyushenko, and Bao Quach.

* Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Talk about a snoozefest. Nah, I guess the Warner story is a good one, but I wish the teams were a little more exciting. I’ll be in Vegas that weekend, but will probably go snowboarding instead of watching the game. *yawn* If I had to pick one, I’d go with ‘Zona.

Eating Your Way Through Japan – Part II

January 19th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Travel

And… we’re… back. I know, I know, it’s been a while since part one, but no get all habuts. Takes long time fo put this together you know. :)

We last left off sipping tea at Ito-Ya, waiting for the pops-recommended, kushikatsu joint to open up (opens at 5PM). When the clock hit 5, it was time to head over to Isomura’s in Ginza.

Eating Your Way Through Japan - Part II - World Wide Ed
Isomura’s in Ginza

The general concept of kushikatsu is that you get a variety of food items, battered up, deep fried, and served to you on a stick (kushi). The secret, according to pops, is to go right when they open, as they have a happy hour special: 12 courses (items), beer, soup, rice, tea and dessert all for X Yen. Hehe, sorry, I don’t remember how much it was, but I believe it was around $20 U.S.

The jubilee of choices came in the following sequence:

  1. Beef
  2. Shi-wrapped Shrimp
  3. Shiitake Mushroom
  4. Scallop
  5. Snow Peas
  6. Corn
  7. Asparagus
  8. Shrimp/Prawn
  9. Pork
  10. Bacon-wrapped Potato
  11. Tofu
  12. Fish Eggs

Here’s a lil’ preview:

The next morning, we tried the other breakfast buffet option in our hotel, Taronga.

My plate full o’ goodies

The atmosphere and food choices seemed a little higher scaled, but the options weren’t as plentiful. If I were to choose one, I’d stick with Ocean Dining.

With our fill of the Tokyo/Odaiba areas, it was off to adventure the rest of this beautiful country. We headed to Nagano, whose specialty is soba.

Since we were in the mood for rahmen yet again, we combined our hunger with Nagano’s finest and found a little shop that served soba, rahmen style.

I wish I could read kanji better so I could tell you the name of this place. :P

Some city browsing/touring followed and, on the way back to our hotel, we came across this neat little restaurant called Mountain Q Hawaiian Diner. Yep, that’s right, “Hawaiian” food in the middle of Japan.

Inside Mountain Q was real kitchie (sp?), with your typical hula girl and grass skirt-type decorations, but the most interesting thing was eating “SPAM nigiri” (instead of SPAM musubi) while listening to KSSK on the radio.

The next morning, we woke up early to go check out what Nagano is also famous for: Oyaki, a baked, almost mochi type shell, stuffed with veggies. On the way to Zenkoji temple, you will find this town’s popular oyaki shop on the right hand side.

Inside, there is an omiyage area, where you can buy your oyaki to go. In the back however, is where the magic happens… the area where they actually make the oyaki over an open fire. This is where we had to be.

The family seemed to take a liking to us, as they fed us a complete meal (soup and tea) with our oyaki, and they also offered to teach us how to make them ourselves (a class usually reserved for special days).

Then it was off to another town in Yudanaka for more adventures. We stayed at Ryokan Biyunoyado (Yudanaka View Hotel), an excellent Western style Ryokan (onsen hotel) in the middle of a town known for onsens (hot springs).

That evening, we were treated to the hotel’s inclusive dinner, which included soup, sashimi, soba, saba, buttered beef, mushroom (straight from the bark!), fresh fruits (Nagano is also known for their apples), sake, and the local beer Shiga Kogen Pale Ale.

The next morning, we had breakfast at the hotel as well, which included miso soup, salad, ham, eggs, salmon, udon, and fresh apple juice.

To leave enough for part 3, I think we’ll end it here… But before we go, here’s a parting shot from Yudanaka’s famous monkey park. Yep, sending you off with a little monkey bidness. :)

Fave Five Friday – Must Have DVDs (Desert Island edition)

January 16th, 2009 | 3 Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Recently, I saw an old episode of “The Office” when “Ryan started the fire.” Outside, the workers were playing Desert Island and I thought to myself, “Eh! That’s a good Fave Five list yeah!?” So here ya go!

Keep in mind that these are the top 5 movies you can’t live without and would have to watch for the rest of your life if you were stranded on a desert island… no pressha! ;) Stuck? Here’s some help!

  1. All box sets of “The Office – I know, I’m kinda cheating on this one cause there’s more than one DVD, but too bad! I loooooove this show!
  2. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan – Classic!
  3. Transformers – Special effects are off the hook!
  4. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold and Kumar 2 Escape from Guantanamo Bay - See a trend here? I like stupid funny movies.
  5. Kung Fu Hustle – Funny, with good story, action and effects.

Honorable mentions go to the Dark Knight, Superbad, Forrest Gump (cause it’s long and I’ll be bored on the island!), Wedding Crashers, American Pie trilogy, Austin Powers trilogy, and The Matrix trilogy. With all the talk below, you know I just gotsta add Princess Bride to the pile! :)

Have a happy Aloha Friday (and weekend) y’all! Shoots!

Newsday Tuesday: Studs with Duds

January 13th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

Over the weekend, there were two interesting tidbits that occurred. Actor Josh Duhamel (“All My Children,” “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!,” “Transformers”) and singer Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson) tied the knot at the Church Estates in Malibu California, and New England Patriots’ poster boy quarterback Tom Brady got engaged to supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

Normally, I’m baffled by the questionable hookups/engagements/weddings of hot, celebrity females and their sub-average male choices (think Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas, or Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony, or the old Pamela Anderson & Bret Michaels/Scott Baio/Kid Rock/Tommy Lee, or anyone with Howard Stern)…

… But the two unions over the weekend really had me scratchin’ my head. And no, I’m not implying that I think Duhamel and Brady are “hot” (c’mon now… guys don’t look at other guys *grin*), but didn’t you think they could do better?

OK, so I (kinda) get it. Fergie is “Fergalicious” and can sing like a mutha… And yes, Bundchen is a supermodel and looks a-ight in a bikini, but still… Their beaus are were the studs of Hollywood and could’ve had the pick of the litter in Tinseltown. They could’ve chosen practically anyone… right?

Talk to me…
* Am I the only one thinking this?
* What other celebrity “huhs!?” are there out there?
* Who would you match up with Duhamel and Brady?
* Ladies, do you think these boys are “hot”? Who’s also on your (that’s) hot list?
* Men, if you were a Hollywood hunk, who would you like to be linked to?

Happy Newsday Tuesday y’all! Holla!

Boys’ Night Out

January 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA, Random

On Friday, wifey went out for drinks with her friend, so I decided to hang with a couple o’ friends for a good ol’ fashioned BNO (Boys’ Night Out). My friend Dave was flying in from Hilo on a later flight, so I first hooked it up with Bari to do what most straight men like to do together on a Friday night… shop and eat frozen yogurt. Ha!

OK, so before you get any ideas :P , here’s why….

In preparation for my BJ Penn/UFC 94 flyaway (yep! I’m goin’!), I had to get some threads that would match the atmosphere I would soon be in: cold and testosteroney with some Vegas flair. And Bari scratched up the lens on his sunglasses so he had to get replacements. See, we had good kine, legit reasons for shopping. The fro-yo date however, I’ve got no excuse for! Nah, nah! We were actually hungry but wanted to wait for Dave to fly in before we full-on ate. So there! ;)

Anyway, our hot date spot of the night would start at Ward Warehouse for some clothes/shades action and then to Menchie’s.

Boys' Night Out

Like its Manoa counterpart (Yogurtland), Menchie’s has a colorful interior…

Boys' Night Out

is self-serve…

Boys' Night Out

and has an assortment of toppings to choose from.

Boys' Night Out

Even though I never plan to, it seems that I always fill my cup to the brim with a bevy of randomness.

Boys' Night Out
A little macro action of my concoction

With the “I just landed” call from Dave, Bari and I walked off our yogurt and headed to Kanpai on Ward. It was bumpin’ when we got there.

Boys' Night Out

We ordered up a storm, including the braised shortrib loco moco…

Boys' Night Out

the spicy garlic chicken…

Boys' Night Out

fried rice with two eggs…

Boys' Night Out

and the Wafu style rib eye steak.

Boys' Night Out

With the eats, we shot the breeze and had a few shots (and a few more). It was overall, a fun night. How did you spend your BNO or GNO this weekend? (Hopefully, it wasn’t a Guy’s Afternoon In. :PThe Office” watchers are (hopefully) laughing…)

Talk to me!
* What’d you do for BNO or GNO this weekend?
* Ever been to Menchie’s? What’d you think? Better than Yogurtland?
* Ever been to Kanpai Bar & Grill? What’s your favorite dish?
* Where should I hit up next?

Happy Funday Monday y’all!

Fave Five Friday – Stink Breath Foods

January 9th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Stink breat’! That’s right! I went there! Haha! Only on WWE I guess. LOL!

I’m pretty paranoid about stink breath so hopefully, the results we get from this list will help us all keep our mouths fresh kine yeah? Haha! Hurr we gooooo!

  1. Garlic – any kine and in any form. Ho da haunas!
  2. kako mochi Kakimochi – this sucks big time cause I loooooove eating it, but I’m usually not home when I do!
  3. Poke – See above. :(
  4. Kim Chee – I guess this falls under garlic, but yikes! If you go good kine Korean BBQ, be prepared to have all your clothes smell like garlic and smoke l’dat too! :(
  5. Italiano – again with the garlic eh? Smelly smelly. Even after I brush my teeth!
  6. Curry – maybe it’s just me, but my breath feels very curry-ish long after the meal. LOL!

Have a happy Friday (and weekend) y’all!
