Fave Five Friday: Pizza

May 29th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Fave Friday, Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

Last weekend, wifey, BIL, BIL’s gf and I were trying to figure out where to grind. The thought of trying a unique/tasty pizza came up but, for the life of me, I couldn’t think of any besides the usual suspects. This one’s for those of you who will be in a similar predicament in the future. You’re welcome. :P

So here’s my list of favorite pizzas in Hawaii:

  1. Brick Oven Pizza (Kalaheo, Kauai) - every trip to Kauai HAS TO include Brick Oven fo sho!
  2. California Pizza Kitchen – they have a lot of winnahz, but one of my favorites is probably the Original BBQ Chicken one (sans the onions).
  3. La Pizza Rina – I love those little 8 inchers.
  4. Domino’s Pizza - makes me reminisce to the days when pops – only on special occasions – used to treat us to Domino’s Pizza (he was/is a health freak!)
  5. Round Table Pizza – I’ve never tried it before, but BIL seems to swear by it, so I’m curious. :P

Yeah, I know, not very interesting, but I’m not much of a pizza connoisseur. Teach me a lil’ sumthin’ sumthin’ will ya? :)

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! :)

P.S. Wish me luck with BJ Penn this weekend!

Survey Thursday: Favorite Teacher

K homeys, we’re back on the reminiscing tip this week. Y’all ready for this?

Last week we got CHOKE feedback about some of our favorite, now-out-of-business, businesses. This week, we’ll pay homage to those who sharpened our minds and molded our futures. Das right’chall, it’s time to give mad props to our favorite teacher(s) of yesteryear! I know ya got um! Here’s your chance to send some love to them! So, without further ado…

Growing up, who was your favorite teacher and why?

I have two. Mrs. Carol Teruya at Wilson Elementary and Ms. Lori Sugimura at Kaiser High.

My memory’s a bit foggy for the elementary school daze, but I do remember that Mrs. Teruya was super nice and sweet and took a liking to me for some reason. I think she had a hand in sending me to A.T. (Academically Talented) classes as well. Big ups to Mrs. Teruya.

Ms. Sugimura was my Japanese language teacher as well as my sensei when I was her T.A. She was a super laid-back and an in-tune-with-the-students kinda teacher. She was on the younger side so she could relate to us a lot better, which made for a fun class. I think she took a liking to me as well. Probably didn’t hurt that I spoke Japanee. :P Shout out to Ms. Sugimura.

K, your turn yo! Who be your fave teech and why?

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – May 27, 2009

I gots good news and bad news for you this week… which one you like first?

K, da good news: no cropping action in dis week’s photo. You get to see the photo, the whole photo, and nothing but the photo. :P

Da bad news: I think it could actually be a tough one this time around.

First off though, let’s congratumalate  Syxx who, with the win last week, makes it two in a row now. And, as skycastles mentioned, is in the hunt for the coveted, never been accomplished, 3-in-a-row holy grail. LOL! Can it be done or will Syxx join the ranks of Paco and snow as the only back-to-back winnahz!? Don’t touch that dial. Stay tuned to find out! :P

Hurr we goooo!

Fave Five Friday: Talents

May 22nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

(This one’s actually wifey’s suggestion. Mad props to her!)

So last week, we went to watch our friend Heejin perform a piano recital at the University of Hawaii’s Orvis Auditorium. Sistah’s got some skills lemme tell you!

After witnessing Jin’s super-talent in person, wifey suggested I put this out to all y’all to see what hidden (or not so hidden) talents we gots ourselves. Hopefully, you won’t have to reach (like me) to find your 5. :P

Holla!

  1. Friendly/People Person & Happy/Never Grouchy – for the most part, I think I’m a friendly, approachable, people person kinda guy. I hate people who are unfriendly, snobby and/or stand-off-ish, or who think they are better than you. My close friends will probably tell you I’m a little too friendly when I get all touchy feely with them! LOL!  I don’t understand people who can go through life being unhappy. You have one life, why not make the most of it right? Don’t worry, be happy!
  2. King of Nicknames – I love making up nicknames for people I know. You folks up in hurr, my co-workers, friends, etc. Loves it!
  3. Semi-athletic – I can usually pick up anything that involves, throwing, catching, running, and jumping, with a little bit of hand-eye coordination.
  4. Never Give Up Attitude – not sure if this is a blessing or a curse, but I don’t like failing at anything, so I keep at things until there’s no more keeping-at anymore. Ha!
  5. Jack of All Trades Master of None – this one’s probably due to the trait above. And maybe my short attention span as well. :P Whether it be coding for the web, strumming a few chords on my uke, spinning a basketball on my finger, blurting out nonsense via this blog, etc., I’d like to think that I’m pretty decent at whatever I decide to put my mind to. Don’t think I’ve ever become a “Master” at any one thing (even though I’m sometimes called a “Webmaster”! LOL!), but at least I try my best. 8)

I don’t even think any of those above are talents. I tol’ you I was reachin’! Haha! Anyway, I’m sure you guys can name some REAL talents that you possess. Share, share!

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! :)

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – May 20, 2009

A-ightch’all! I know it’s Where In Hawaii Wednesday, but we gotsta dish American Idol right quick. What did you think of last night’s performance? Who did you think did better? How did you have your round by round scoring? Who do you think will take it all? Who do you WANT to take it all?

Overall, I thought it was a so-so show. I anticipated Adam Lambert to have that “moment”, but he really didn’t. Kris Allen’s first two songs were pretty smoove, but his 3rd one left something to be desired. Actually, I think both of their 3rd songs were let downs. There were moments in Adam’s performances when I started growing tired of it (his style). Still trying to figgah out who will sell more records, and my vote is still with Allison Iraheta. :P

Now… on to tha bidness at hand… Where In Hawaii yo!

Last week’s pic was supposed to be a hard one, but yet again, you buggahs never cease to amaze me. Syxx was just the second person to chime in, and, low and behold, got it. What the!?!? I’m hoping that this week’s one will pose a slight problem for at least the first 3 of you, :P but if I were a guessin’ man, I’d bet that it’s gonna be another easy one. We shall see…

This Is How We Do: Bathrooms

May 19th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in This Is How We Do...

On my never-ending quest to entertain  y’all, I’m introducing another little game up in hurr. It’s called “This Is How We Do”… and the idea is pretty much how it sounds. I choose a topic and we all share our unique stories of how we “do” (it).

Since bat’chrooms seemed to be a popular topic a few weeks ago, let’s go with that theme for today. I know… quality journalism right? ;)

Honestly, I think I’m a closet germaphobe. A Monk-in-the-making, if you will. I try – at all costs – to avoid touching door handles or rails or other common places people put their grubby paws on. Bathrooms practically give me a complex because not only do these germ infested peeps touch places I may also have to touch, but they do so with #1 or #2 infested paws. Ack!

So I seriously have a ritual I go through in order to make it halfway bearable up in thurr. I have it down to a science… fo real!

So without further ado… This Is How I Do: Bathrooms…

* Push door open with fist, elbow or foot - the outside of the door is not too bad as the people going in would be relatively clean (you would think).
* If it’s #1, aim for the puddle less traveled – the less splash the better, so I avoid the puddles at the bottom of the receptacle. I even opt to aim down the sides of the receptacle. The thinking is that not too many people do that (they usually aim straight forward) so it could possibly still be clean if a splash were to freakishly return to sender.
* If #2, push stall door open with fist, elbow or foot and close/lock with TP – the stall’s lock is probably the grossest thing in the whole joint. Since there is no sink between toiletsville and the lock, you can be sure that that thang is growing some things you don’t wanna write home to mama about.
* Do a spot check – before I take my throne,  I make sure that there are ample toilet seat covers and backup TP to take care of bidness. I also check to see what goodies the previous owner left for me. If there is indeed a present left behind, I move to the next stall. Repeat until empty/clean toilet found. In case of emergency, flush 4-5 times before using.
* Wipe seat – using a big wad of TP, I wipe down the seat and flush that puppy down the tubes.
* Wipe seat again – with a bigger TP wad, I wipe the seat down again (to clean the splashes) and place it in the center of the water. This wad will help “cushion” the fall to avoid splash-ups to your crown jewels. LOL! I can’t believe we’re talking about this! Sorry!
* Use toilet seat cover – these are golden. In case of emergency, laying down rolls of TP on the seat works just as well. Be careful not to set off the auto flush while working your magic or you have to start all ovah again. *groan*
* Kick seat cover in with foot and flush with extra TP or foot – when I finish dropping off the kids, I kick the toilet seat cover in the bowl with my foot and cross my fingers that the auto-flush works. If it doesn’t, an extra wad of TP or my foot work equally well to handle the manual flush action.
* Open lock and door with TP – if you can’t already tell, TP, for me, is money. I use it for everything.
* Pump paper tower dispenser and tuck under arm – sometimes you’ll get those old school paper towel dispensers that you need to manually pump. TP to the rescue! Otherwise, do this first (get your paper towel) and then wash your hands. You don’t want to be touching that handle with clean hands.
* Wash hands like mad with soap and wipe with paper towel – this goes without saying.
* Use wet/used paper towel (or dispense new one) to open bathroom door to get the hell outta dea, using feet as much as possible – I actually get annoyed now when public restrooms don’t have a trash can right next to the exit/door. Don’t they know!?!? :P

So that’s my ritual. A little neurotic or not anal enough? *giggle* Whatchu tink?

So how about it? Bathrooms… How do you do?

Spank Me! I’ve Been Naughty…

May 18th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA, Random, Sports

Spank was the only word in that title that remotely relates to what I’ll be talkin’ ’bout today, but I was hoping that the rest of it would lure you on in. Since you’re here, reading this gibberish, I think it worked. Muhahaha!

OK, so I’ve been watching a lot of sports lately. My Magic are moving on to the Eastern Conference Championships (sayonara Boston!), there’s been some sick action in the MLB, and then there’s always MMA.

One thing I’ve noticed (and experienced), is this ritual we have of spanking each other on the butt after every good play. Where in the heck did this come from and why in the heck did it start? Can you imagine the look on the dude’s face when another dude spanked him on his behind for the very first time in history!? There may’ve been some punches thrown then. Ahahaha!

I can understand the high-five, the arm bash, the chest bump, and even the occasional hug when the adrenaline is a pumpin’, but how one testosterone laden man’s open hand can touch another testosterone laden booty is beyond me. Yet, I see it all the time, without even a second thought. Heck, in the heat of the moment, I’ve even done it or received it with glee!

Is this wrong, and if not, where do you draw the line? Can a male coach do this to his female athletes without worry of sexual harassment? Is it just wrong for a teammate to add an extra pep or squeeze to the booty slap - after a REALLY good play – for extra emphasis? I’ve actually seen one dude kiss another dude on the lips after a grueling MMA match. WTH!?!? That one had me baffled and in stitches all at the same time that I just had to rewind my DVR like 5 more times just to make sure I saw it correctly.

As always, I’ve gone off on a weird tangent, but I just thought I’d throw this one out there. I can’t be the only one axeing these questions can I? :P

Fave Five Friday – Karaoke Songs

Is our WWE `ohana a singin’ bunch? Let’s find out shall we!?

This week’s Fave Five topic is… yep, you guessed it… Karaoke Songs (and please don’t pronounce that “care-e-o-key” :P )!

These are songs that you either like to sing yourself (if you’re da mic hog of da group), or with the group. Either way, it’s fun stuffs no?

  1. Let Me Be There – (singing it like) the Ekolu version of course!
  2. More Than Words – only if someone knows how to harmonize the other part. 8)
  3. A Song For Mama – most notes be in my range (easy). :P
  4. Nothin But A G Thang – extra fun when you’re feelin’ a little tipsy and battling someone verse to verse. LOL!
  5. Anything Rick Astley – need I say more?

How about the annoying 5? Here’s mine:

  1. Summer Nights or Bohemian Rhapsody – these are actually fun group songs, but sometimes overplayed.
  2. I Will Survive – girly song… I can’t relate. :P
  3. Barbie Girl – see above
  4. Anything unfamiliar or “self indulgent” (as Simon would say) – nothing more boring than watching/listening to a song that puts the singer in their own little world.
  5. Anything Britney or Boy Band-ish – need I say more?

On a side note, how about dem cheesy (local) music videos dey got goin’ on with some of dem songs? Or the Korean kine that uses footage that doesn’t even relate to the song? LOL!

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! :)

We’ve all got our favorite Zippy’s. Our “home base” if you will. This be yo chance to sound off and represent. So without further ado… *clears throat*

Chicky chicky check if your school favorite Zippy’s is in effect – Represent! LOL!

Growing up in H.K. during those “hard core Zippy’s years”, Zippy’s Koko Marina was probably the one I identified with the most. It could’ve been the lunch-pick-up on the way to the beach, the dinner-pick-up on the way home from school/work, the midnight thang after chillin’ at the homey’s crib, or, even the 2AM-er after a long night of shooting 9-ball at Brian’s/Shark’s/Velvet’s (LOL!)… We’d be there. Some close seconds would be the McCully one (that’s usually where the “scenery” was at), and the Kahala one (new and on the way home).

Since Zippy’s is so much a part of all of our cultures, we shouldn’t just limit this survey to locations. What say we open thangs up and share our favorite Zippy’s story/stories as well as our favorite Zippy’s dish(es) while we’re at it? Bonus question: Which Zippy’s have you NOT been to (click here for help or here’s a list: Ala Moana, Dillingham, Ewa, Kahala, Kailua, Kaimuki, Kalihi, Kaneohe, Kaneohe (William Henry Road), Kapahulu, Kahului, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Makiki, Mc Cully, Mililani, Nimitz, Pearl City, Pearl Ridge, Vineyard, Waiau, Wahiawa, Waimalu, Waipahu, Waipio)? I’ll start:

Favorite Zippy’s: Koko Marina (for sentimental reasons)
Favorite Zippy’s Story: I actually applied for Zippy’s back in da high school days and got rejected! How you figgah? Well, I did get called in to their main office for an interview, but never received that final call back… so that is kinda like getting rejected right? So shame! Ah, das ok, I got a higher paying job where I got to eat poke all day (seafood department at Safeway) so it all worked out. :P
Favorite Zippy’s Dish: Zip Min
Zippy’s Location(s) I’ve Never Been To: Ewa, Kalihi, Kaneohe (William Henry Road location), Kahului, Kapolei, Waipahu. Just 6 out of 25? Not bad at all… 8)

Go get um yo!

EATS: Mitch’s Sushi

May 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

It’s been a while since we did an EATS (Ed Ate Tasty Stuffs/Ed Always Tastes Stuffs) segment up in hurr so it’s probably about that time eh?

Why the break in action? Well, mostly because the photos take like FO-EVAH fo edit and the payoff (feedback) is usually minimal. A recent trip to a popular sushi spot made me want to dip my toes back in the EATS water again. No let me down k? :P

I first heard about Mitch’s Fish Market and Sushi Bar from my friend Kari. She’s been raving about it after eating there with her friend, and her friend’s husband, a fisherman, who’s been here many times before.

After weeks of pestering (from me me), Kari finally gave in and planned a group outing so we can go check um out. Below are the photos from that night.

We were led into the semi-private room (4 tables of 4) on the other side of the restaurant, which was designed almost like a Japanese tea house. Neat! Our friend Todd ordered the squid legs to get the party started.

The one thing I kept reading about in all of the online reviews was that the Spiny Lobster Sashimi was the thing to get. There was (no diggity) no doubt that I would be getting one this night, but there was one slight issue. “Mitch’s Special Course”, which included the spiny little thang, along with other popular appetizers, sashimi and more, had a 2 order minimum order rule. WTH?

At $95 a pop, I was like, “Are you fo real!?” Wifey is not a very big eater to begin with, so her portion would either go to waste or I would have to end up eating like a Manchild! No way Jose! I opted for ala carting the puppy, which actually worked out for the better. (If anyone from Mitch’s is reading this, please reconsider this rule. Me no likey.)

Another “must-try” according to the online reviews is the Van Van, a grilled shrimp, salmon, avocado, nori appetizer wrapped in white fish.

At the end of your meal, they take your spiny lobster scraps (along with the head), and finish you off with a scrumptious lobster miso soup. She go!

Overall a very delicious and “spoil yourself” dinner fo sho. Everything was extremely fresh (Mitch even has a huge lobster tank in the back) and top notch. The only thing I would complain about is the price (it’s not cheap), but you definitely get what you pay for (in a good way). Hope y’all enjoyed this one! Dayem, I’m getting hungry again looking at all these photos! Apologies if you are too. :P

Valet Gone Wild

May 11th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Is it just me or am I the only one DEATHLY afraid of valet service?

I’m not sure if I’ve been “trained” by my pops to despise them (he always tells me “don’tu you evah do balet you know” in his Japanese accent) or if it’s because of personal experience (the surf racks on the top of my ride was totally destroyed by some valet goon), or both, but to this day, I avoid valet service like the plague.

[back story]
So about 5 or so years ago, I had to park in some random building for a meeting and the only option was valet. D’oh! The meeting went well and all was fine until *dun dun DUNNNNN!* I got back to my car. For some reason my surf racks were in my back seat as they were trying to send me off. I was like “oh no he di-ENT!”, parked the g-ride, got out of my car and asked them what was going on. The imbecile valet guy was like “oh, no, nothing, they just fell off on their own so I put them in your car for you.”

I was then like, “C’mon, be serious!” as I started to examine the dents in the roof of my car. He continued to deny it, saying they just fell off. Getting nowhere, I just asked for the manager and the name and contact info for the owner of the parking structure. Months later, I was finally able to get them to admit it and have their insurance company take care of the damages. But for me, the (psychological) damages were already done.

Fast forward to today.

I think I’ve gotsta be the most paranoid/anxious person in the world when it comes to valet service. I can’t speak for all valet drivers, but I’m guessing a good number of ‘em, frankly, my darling, just don’t give a damn. It’s not their car, it’s just a part time job, and most of the time, they’re in a freakish rush.

A ding in the bumper here, a scratch on the mirror there… What I can’t see won’t hurt them is what they’re probably thinking. From what I hear, these bad boys make REALLY good pay (with the tip) too. The least they could do is care about my car right?

Grrrrr…

On a random side note, don’t you get shmall kine irraz when there’s balet service in a parking lot that certainly doesn’t need it!? I can park my car right there *pointing* and get it after dinner right there *pointing again*… yet, the valet dude insists that it’s valet only just so he can get his lousy tip from me.

Double Grrrr…

Am I just being a crazy, paranoid, schizophrenic or are there other peeps out there who share this same sentiment? Please holla at cho boy if you’re with me. 8)

Talk to me…
* Are you just as paranoid as me?
* Got horror stories of your own to share?
* Wanna dare name your least favorite valet spots? Most favorite?
* How much do you usually tip?
* Are you from the valet world? Give us some perspective from your side? Is this all a common misconception?
* Are you more careful with nicer cars? Less so with beat-up ol’ jalopies
* Is it true that you guys make mad bank?

Hijacking topics
* How did you spend your mother’s day weekend?
* Did you Star Trek it up?
* Damn you Glen Davis (and Boston)!!!

Happy Monday y’all! Have a great week!
