Fave Five Friday - Hawaii Athletes

August 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA

With all of the Olympic hysteria going on (and the lack of comments from my Kauai related posts :P ), I’ll switch it up a bit for this week’s Fave Five list to include an Olympic star from Hawaii: Bryan Clay. Clay captured gold in the decathlon this year, the last American to do so since Dan O’Brien did it in Atlanta in 1996.

Anytime a local boy (or girl) does good, it makes me proud to call Hawaii my home. Here’s my current list of fave Hawaii Athletes.

  1. BJ Penn - the ultimate bad @$$ in MMA. His stand-up is wicked and his ground game is off the chain. He is regularly mentioned when a “best pound for pound fighter” debate occurs and is easily in the top 10 of best MMA fighters of all time. The best part is that he stays humble and always recognizes Hawaii in everything he does. True local boy who remains true. You gotta love it!
  2. Colt Brennan - Bruddah turned this town upside down with the announcement of his returning, the leadership in our undefeated season and potential Heisman run. Now with his drafting from the Washington Redskins, we will continue to root him on.
  3. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson - this athlete has gone “Hollywood” on us, but we still love him nonetheless. He still does the shaka and mentions Hawaii periodically.
  4. Jason Elam - Anytime you can use a guy from Hawaii on your Fantasy Football team (and he does well no less!), it’s golden!
  5. Bryan Clay -you can’t argue the title of “world’s greatest athlete” for this Castle High grad. Doing in big on the International Level. Mad respect!

Who’s yours?

Spanish Basketball Team Picture - Racist?

August 13th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Events, Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

So my friend just forwarded me this article: Spanish basketball team poses for offensive picture, which shows the Spanish Basketball Team posing for a team picture, while slanting their eyes with their hands. I’m still baffled by it and trying to figure out why they would do such a thing. Personally, I’m pretty offended, but I wanted to send a feeler out there and see what you all out there thought of it as well. Post your comments below…

Portuguese Bean Soup Weekend

August 4th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

After watching an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I got inspired to give this cooking thing a try. Cooking, like real estate, is one of those things I feel I would be good at if I gave it a go. You know how you just have that feeling? Anyway…

After scooping a top secret(?) Portuguese Bean Soup recipe from a couple of co-workers (mahalos to Matt and Lance!), the lady and I took it (and the “ingredaments”) to the parentals’ crib yesterday afternoon to try it out. They summoned me to help them set up their wireless network, so in exchange, I “borrowed” their pots, pans and electricity to do the deed. :P

It got rave reviews, but I’d still like to perfect it, especially the process. Buggah took hours upon hours to finish. *sigh*

Now I know I can’t get outta here without sharing the recipe and/or some shots of the dish, so I will duly oblige. But since I don’t know how top secret the co-workers’ recipe is, I’ll protect my life and type up a generic one modified from a recipe the lady has in a book.

1-2 pounds smoked ham hock
2 cans kidney beans
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
3 cans beef broth
2 cans tomato sauce
3 large potatoes, cut into cubes
4 carrots, cut into cubes
1 Portuguese sausage
1 head cabbage

(In the voice of Aunty Marialani) In a large pot, place the ham hocks, kidney beans, garlic and onions, and cover with water. Simmer for approximately 2 hours (skim off fat while cooking). Pull out ham hocks, strip meat off bones, and replace in pot. Dispose of bones. Add the rest of the ingredients (except cabbage) and simmer for 1-2 more hours. Add cabbage and cook until soft and part of soup. Optionally: add elbow macaroni.

The ingredaments for step 2
The “ingredaments” for step 2

Photo of soup cold (yeah, I forgot to take it hot)

Talk to me:
* Any tips or secrets on how to make your Portuguese Bean Soup a winnah?
* Any recipes of your own to share for the married couple to be?
* How did you spend your weekend?

Have a happy Monday y’all!

Aloha Slammers

August 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Last night, the curtain closed on another Kalakauan classic. Slammers, the popular sports bar/good eats joint closed its doors to the public at this location. The good news is that it it only temporary as they prepare to re-open under the name Kanpai Bar & Grill on Ward Avenue (across Sports Authority where the old Dixie Grill and more recently Tio’s used to be). Those who frequented Slammers for the past 3 years, came for one last night of drinks and good times. See the scenes below. Go and support Kanpai Bar & Grill when they re-open k? They are currently targeting early September.

Photos for the Slideshow?

July 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

It was recently suggested by C. (to-tha) G. that I talk more about the wedding stuffs since I am (as many of you may be) going through it at this very point in my life. So I thought I’d feel all y’all out and give it a try.

As somewhat of a computer guy, now is the time when things start getting interesting (I’ll explain below). We’re down to the wire, and up until now, I’ve pretty much been a spectator/supporter. The lady has been taking on a lot of the load (props to her!). Things like flowers, centerpieces, her wedding dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, cake selection, tsuru (crane) folding, etc. I’m your typical guy: “anything is fine.” (Notice how I didn’t say “I don’t care” future husbands to be? *grin*)

In any case, why am I now starting to pay attention? It’s getting to the juicy portion of the show. With a decent amount of computer skills, I can come in handy when it comes to things like the customization of the invitation, or the slideshow. Verrrry interesting. *rubbing hands together*

Hence this post.

How does one narrow down the photos for the slideshow?

I was told that 30 per section is the norm:
* 30 for you (which includes individual shots growing up, with friends and with family)
* 30 for the lady (ditto)
* 30 together

How the heck?

With this age of digital photos, I must have like a billion photos to choose from for the slideshow. It doesn’t help that I’m a slight (ok mayjah) ham when it comes to making faces in photos. And since the idea is to entertain your guests with funny/memorable photos, how on earth are you supposed squeeze these in?

Talk to me!
* Anybody have any tricks up their sleeves on how to select the right photos?
* Got any funny wedding slideshow stories to share?
* Got any wedding slideshow horror stories to share?
* As guests, what kinda photos do you like to see?

Help a brutha out! Or the following may have to make the cut! :P

FREE Movie Pass Giveaway: Pineapple Express - WINNER!

July 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Congratulations goes to liane for being the lucky winner to my FREE Movie Pass Giveaway: Pineapple Express contest for her hilarious stoner story.

i never got stoned, but my friend did when she was in high school… she did it that one time and never again since. five years later, i’m pregnant at her house and dying for snack. and i find brownies she made. knowing she hasn’t done weed in YEARS, i still was ultra paranoid to eat them, more so because i was pregnant and didn’t want to have stoner baby. i spent 20 minutes trying to wake her up to find out if the brownies had weed in them. she thought i was crazy and ON WEED myself to even believe that she would make those kinds of brownies. i thought she was on weed b/c it took me 20 minutes to get a straight answer out of her. it got to a point where i was yelling, “is there weed in the brownies!!! i’m hungry for a snack but i don’t want to get high!!!” maybe that’s lame, but it was hilarious to me.

She joins JMAW and Miss Pris as the 3rd winner to these oh so exciting giveaways:

Please help me congratulate liane y’all!

Oooh, is tomorrow Where in Hawaii Wednesday awwwready? *grin*

Hilarious Sights from the MMA Weekend

July 28th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA

OK, so if you’re an MMA fan, you probably already saw the weekend’s action, so I won’t go into it in much detail, but there were a few things I saw that just cracked me up! And I just gotsta know if the following were just as amusing to you as they were to me.

CBS had its second major event on network television on Saturday, which featured the Lawler vs. Smith rematch. The formula was pretty much the same for the event, which included an unpolished (as usual) Frank Shamrock behind the mic, but the more distracting thing about him was his BRACES! Did anyone else crack up with me when they saw that??? I must admit, he is getting a little better at making it seem like he’s not reading the prompter word for word, but the braces and his inability to speak normally just threw everything off for me completely.

In the Jake Shields / Nick “The Goat” Thompson Welterweight title match, Thompson’s repulsive beard made me laugh as well. He really did look like a goat with that thang. A billygoat.

Lastly, though aired the night before, Friday’s edition of Inside MMA cracked me up the hardest so I saved the best for last! Co-host Kenny Rice had a progressively worse sweatfest as the show continued. At the top of the show, he mentioned that the A/C in the Osaka-Jo Hall (the site of this week’s show) had been shut off. In the beginning you could see Kenny and Bas start to glisten with moisture. As the show went on, Bas kept his relative cool, while Kenny kept a’ drippin’. His forehead started to bead, his neck collar started to drench, and at one point, he pulled out his handkerchief and wiped his face mid-question! In the closing segment of the show, they cut back to Kenny and Bas and it looked like he was drained and ready to faint. His hair was drenched, collar undone (with tie removed) and eyes barely open. It looked bad, but I couldn’t help but laugh my butt off. Poor, poor Kenny… I hope he’s ok.

P.S. Congrats to “Goose” Gossage for his recent induction into the baseball Hall of Fame!
P.P.S. Don’t forget to comment for your chance to see Pineapple Express for FREE! :)

Lazy stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogan) has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver (James Franco): to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city’s most dangerous drug lord (Gary Cole), he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they’re not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia; incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the Pineapple Express.

Guy Rule: Every Other Seat Please

July 22nd, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

So the other night when I went with Kelv (and Bari folks, even though we got separated! :P ) to watch the premiere of The Dark Knight, it made me think of something funny we as guys do.

Have you ever noticed that guys, in an act of trying to be too cool for school, have to NOT sit next to each other? At the movies, or sporting events or even in class, if the crowd/seating permits it, we will leave an open seat between us and another dude or be seen as you know what (not manly). Hehe, yeah, I’m being politically correct, but you know what I mean. On top of that, we just gotsta slouch way back in our chair, lean to the side and spread our legs like a gymnast in order to maintain that level of cool.

The theater was so packed that this was not even remotely possible, but I know you’ve seen it before. And it’s pretty funny when you really think about it. I don’t know what it is. Maybe we just need our personal space, maybe we don’t want another guy’s hairy leg touching ours, or maybe, just maybe, the single guys are leaving room for a hot chick to sit down and make our day. OK, NOT, but help me think of this baffler won’tcha?

BTW, before the movie started, some dude yelled out “Mario Kart!” and prompted everyone to join his Multiplayer network. At first I thought that he was just some annoying clown who wanted attention, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that this man was a genius! When I told the lady that story the next day, she was like, “I bet you wish you brought your DS huh?” And I was like “YEAH!” Dammit. Anyway, I will do a Mario Kart post later, but thought I’d share that little tidbit for today. Happy Tuesday!

Talk to me!
* Why do guys feel the urge to leave a seat open between ‘em?
* Do girls really care if we sit right next to each other?
* Any interest in a future Mario Kart post?

MLB Home Run Derby Today!

July 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

Marking the halfway point to the Major League Baseball 2008 season, the MLB All-Star festivities’ popular home run derby contest kicks off today at 2PM Hawaii Standard Time on ESPN. Sponsored by State Farm, the battle of the (long) bombers, like the All-Star Game itself, takes place at historic Yankee Stadium, the last time ever before the new Yankee Stadium becomes the home of the New York Yankees. The 8 participants (four from each league) this year are:

National League

American League

Talk to me!
Who you rootin’ for? Even though he’s not one of the biggest players of the bunch, as a Phillies fan, I gotta go with my boy Chase Utley. My other picks are Lance Berkman (experience) and Josh Hamilton (bruddah is huge!). Tune in to see why Baseball is one of the most exciting sports on earth. :P

All-Star Game 2008
Today: State Farm Home Run Derby @ 2PM on Digital Channel 0222 (ESPN) or HD ESPN 1222.

UFC 84 to (Re)-Air for Free on Spike TV Against CBS’s Elite XC Show

July 9th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA

The UFC has done it again.

A few weeks after announcing an exciting Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin card on July 19th, the same night as upstart Affliction’s Banned Pay Per View event (Digital PPV Channel 0700 or HDPPV Channel 1700), the UFC has teamed up again with Spike TV (Digital Channel 0559) to fill up July 26th’s lineup with a night chock full of MMA, including the re-airing of the Silva vs. Irvin fight, an episode of UFC Unleashed and Ultimate Knockouts 5 and the re-airing of the once PPV UFC 84 Penn vs. Sherk event, to go up against the second showing of CBS’s Elite XC Saturday Night Fights! You heard it here first! :P

Holy cow! That’s enough quality MMA content to overload one’s brain, let alone one’s DVR.

And let’s not forget all the MMA programming that HDNet has in store , including Dream 5! It’s gonna be one exciting month son!

Back to the Work Grind Yo

July 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Many of us had the day off last Friday July 4th. The forward thinking (or lazy?) ones also took Thursday off to enjoy a scrumptious 4 day weekend. Were you one of the scrumptiously relaxed ones this weekend? If so, what did you do? Just chill or catch up on errands l’dat?

Isn’t it strange how that always happens? You take the day off to relax, but you end up running around like a chicken without a head.

That was me this weekend, but for the most part it was good kine (productive) stuffs. I passed my State Real Estate Licensing exam (woo hoo!), celebrated (and got a bit tipsy) by doing the pau hana and karaoke thang with the future brother and law and gang, got tanned (burnt actually) and spent quality time with the homies at Sandy Beach and then later to watch the fireworks off Maunalua Bay, bonded with the ‘rents, changed my oil, made the return to my softball team (and hit a grand slam to boot!), finalized (I think) a tuxedo style for the big dance, picked up 3 solid Reyn Spooner aloha shorts at the 20% off Ala Moana sale, and downed some Acai for my future article. *big breath* Whew!

Here are some of the photo highlights…

Hope errone had a good 4th of July. Back to the work grind for us, but at least we have each other eh? ;)
