I’m So Over It [Guest Blog by kuya.d]

Once in awhile you just gotta vent it out (a la sistah Rosey), so for this Fave Five Friday edition let’s go against the flow and call it an “I’m So Over It Friday”. Get it off your chest! All those things, people, and topics that have been making you all “irrrimatated” … Vent it out people.

Just remember, this is a family show so let’s keep it classy and “G-rated”. We don’t want the Advertiser to give Ed the boot.

Here’s my “I’m So Over It” Five:

  1. The singing Mayor – I don’t even have to name this guy and we know who it is. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a decent singer. I’d just rather have my mayor talking about key plans to improve the city, not finding his key on the magic mike.
  2. Furlough Fridays – there’s like five left for the year … How about we just bunch um together and make Spring Break one week longer? Wait, didn’t they trim Spring Break by one week in order to keep the kids in school? What the?!
  3. Brett Favre – just say you going play already cuz’. We all know you will. (And we know Ed is targeting you for his fantasy team).
  4. “Prices differ in Hawaii” – weren’t we all stoked when Pizza H ran that “any size, any toppings all for ten dollars” ad? Then Bam! It costs us like sixteen dollars for the same deal. It ain’t costing six bucks more to make the same pie here in Hawaii. Price of Paradise and all … Puh-leeze!
  5. Dude with the surgical mask – buddy, you ain’t the only one suffering in this economy. I’m sure if you really need the scripts for a good reason, somebody might help you. But please, stop messing with the safety of customers and employees.

And with that … I’m So Over. Whew! Thanks for hearing me out. Enjoy the weekend, and VHO7V Friday to y’all!

The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

March 5th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Ay-yo, I tweeted about this one a while ago, but just realized that I’ve never blogged about it… One of my favorite commercials in recent memory: the Old Spice – The Man Your Man Could Smell Like one! Ohh Emm Gee, it cracks me up every time it comes on, so, if you’ve been living under a rock, and have yet to see it, check it:

Old Spice – The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

Pure hilarity yeah? Got any funny/favorite commercials of your own to share? Some that come to mind are:

  • The “Wassaaaap” ones
  • A lot of the Jack-In-the-Box ones (the Bowl Cut one still cracks me up today!)
  • And many of the ones that run during the Super Bowl

Post your favorite commercial(s) below and some of your favorite lines from them.

Wanna be a Guest Blogger?

I’m going on vacay in a couple of weeks. Here’s your chance to take over WWE and show the `Ohana what real blogging is supposed to be like… Not none of this amateur-ish nonsense that spews from my piehole on the regular. ;) And, if history is any indication, your guest blog should get CHOKE kine action on the comments! So if you wanna hijack this spot and dish about anything ranging from Celebrity Gossip, Music, Movies, TV, or whatevs (feel free to talk about “anyt’ing you want. Anything? Anyt’ing!” :P ), just email your blog to me, I’ll queue it up for ya, and hilarity should ensue! ;) Holla!

The Sched (so far)…

  • FRI 03/12 – (Open)
  • MON 03/15 – JMAW
  • TUE 03/16 – (Open)

  • WED 03/24 – hemajang?
  • THU 03/25 – (Open)
  • FRI 03/26 – (Open), but it’s a holiday (Kuhio Day) for some so the readership may not be there

Fave Friday: Superpowers

February 19th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Sports

We’ve all dreamt it I’m sho. Having that one super power that will take us over the top. The man amongst men. The woman amongst women. Would be nice right?

Well, instead of just talking about and dreaming about it, let’s put it on paper and make it a goal. You know what they say, write down your goals and you will achieve them. Soooo, post your ideal super power below and it shall become reality. :P K, maybe not, but play along won’tcha? 8)

At first, I thought of the most logical choices:

* Flying/Teleportation: Going on a trip, anywhere in the world be sa-weet!
* Living forever: I am Team Edward after all… ;)
* Invisibility/X-Ray Vision: duh! Ya bettah axe somebody rayboyjr why. :P Joking!

But the more and more I think about it, I think my superpower would simply be to make fo’ real kine money with the wave of my hands. See, I’m easy. :P

Why? Well, because if I had an unlimited amount of cash flow, I would personally own my own jet or teleporting machine to travel. I could just buy a hyperbaric chamber to live (almost) forever. I could just pay to get an invisibility suit or x-ray goggles. Well, if they ever existed. So you see, with money out of thin air, I could just about do what I want. Muhahahaha!

I know, it ’s the root of all evil, but what they hey, we’re living in the fantasy world right now.

So what’s your superpower wish? Post it below and I’ll buy it for ya! ;)

Need some ideas? Check out this listing from Wikipedia!

Happy VH07V Friday y’all! Have a great weekend!

P.S. Tomorrow night, the UH Rainbow Men’s Basketball Team takes on Cal Poly at 8PM at the Stan Sheriff Center in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable sponsored ESPN Bracketbuster game. Oceanic will be passing out an eco-friendly tote bag for the first 2,000 fans. Come on down if you can! (The Wahine are also in action earlier that night, taking on La Tech at 5PM.) Go Bows! :)

Fave Friday – Bizarre Foods

February 12th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

So wifey sent me a link to a Yahoo! article titled “20 weird food combinations people eat“, and thought it might make an interesting topic for us to discuss on this here blog. Y’all down? To expand our topic area up a bit more, let’s also include “bizarre foods” in general (ala Andrew Zimmern) in the convo. Cool? Cool!

Weird Food Combos (to others?) I Eat:
* Raw eggs cracked over hot rice and shoyu
* Cucumbers dipped in shoyu + mayonaise dip
* Sometimes I mix my mac salad in my gravy. Yeah, not very weird to us, but perhaps to da non-locals?

Bizarre Foods (to me):
* Frog legs – never had it, but somewhat interested. Tastes like chicken right? ;)
* Basashi (raw horse) – had it, but doused it with shoyu. Tasted just like maguro sashimi.
* Balut – never had it, and am a bit afraid. :P Tastes just like ___?

Post your votes for weird food combos and/or bizarre foods in the comment area below. Doesn’t have to necessarily be stuffs you actually ate.

On a side note, here’s an amusing image from the Super Bowl that was sent to me by kuya.d. Too funny!

Super Bowl Gay Image
[Enter your own caption here... How's this? "McAfee... Stover... Gay"] :P

Name Game

Ho, planny action on Wednesday’s blog yeah? Much love for playing along y’all! You da bes! :)

We gots another little game to pass your time today. Let’s see far we can get!

So the other morning I was listening to Rory Wild, Greg Hammer and Crystal Akana on the radio and they were playing their popular name game. You know the one where the first playa names a famous person and the next playa has to use a part of that name to state a new name of another famous person? For example:

* Michael Jackson
* Jackson Browne (uses “Jackson” from Michael Jackson)
* Brownstone (uses “Brown” from Jackson Browne)
* Joss Stone (uses “Stone” from Brownstone)

Not sure if any of the oddah bloggers did this already, but I thought it might be fun for us to try today. So waddaya say? Like try? If it gets stuck on someone too long, feel free to start fresh with a new name to keep the puppy goin’… I’ll start with a common one that has two first names to make um easier. :)

* “Bob Dylan”

Next?

P.S. Happy VHO7V Friday! :)

Fave Friday – Hawaii Chefs

January 29th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

I know, I know, there are not many to choose from, in terms of really well-known chefs from Hawaii. Let’s see, off the top of my head, we got the big dogs like Roy Yamaguchi, Alan Wong, Sam Choy, Russell Siu, Chai Chaowasaree, Chef Mavro (George Mavrothalassitis), etc., and some of the lesser known, but equally impressive, like Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi, Collin Nishida and Onjin Kim (anybody know what happened to her btw?).

In the comment area below, list your favorite Hawaii Chef(s) and why. Whether it be their cooking ability, ono-ness of their restaurant, their personality, or all of the above. I have a few for various reasons:

  • Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi: He’s the co-owner of Tokkuri-Tei, my all-time favorite restaurant, hands-down. He’s down to earth and has a hilarious sense of humor. Santa always makes me crack up without even saying a word.
  • Chuck Furuya: Yeah, he’s not really a chef, but close enough. He runs Vino Italian Tapas & Wine Bar in Restaurant Row, and, oh by the way, is one of only two Master Sommeliers in the state of Hawaii. He’s genuine and friendly and has a knack for taking the intimidation out of wine. Back in college when I worked at KHET Hawaii Public Television, we filmed a segment with him for one of our shows. During setup, he yells to this little student grunt (me) across the room and says “Eh, I know you! I played ball with you in Hawaii Kai the other weekend! Remember me?” Stunned, I was like “Huh!?” Then I realized he was talking to me and was able to muster up this glorious response: “Me? Oh yeah!” We continued to shoot segments with him and he would always take the time to make conversation with all of us about anything and everything. Recently, I saw him with his son at Cafe Laufer and he still recognized me and shook my hand. What an awesome guy!
  • Sam Choy: just seems really friendly and welcoming. Plus, he loves him some poke. My kinda guy!
  • Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong: though insanely intimidating, these two guys seem warm hearted in person and continue to stay true to their roots, choosing to buy local whenever possible. My “claim to fame” for Roy Yamaguchi was that I gave him a ride to and from Roy’s Hawaii Kai – in my little Civic hatchback – before and after a shoot in our KHET studios (I lived in Hawaii Kai at the time and it was looked at as a better, more economical idea than sending a production van out to Hawaii Kai to pick him up). My “claim to fame” for Alan Wong was actually a few days ago when I interviewed him for Part II of my “Poke Paradise” series for AroundHawaii.com, set to be published on February 1st. 8) Here’s a little sneak peek for y’all! Let me know what you think!

An Interview with Alan Wong

Talk to me!
* Post your favorite Hawaii chefs below and why.
* Thoughts on the above interview?
* Excited about the new iPad?
* Excited about the Olympics?

Have a happy VH07V Friday and weekend y’all! See you on the flipside! :)

Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery

January 22nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Music

So the latest gossip these days (or so I hear) is about Heidi Montag’s/Pratt’s plastic surgery craziness, where she apparently underwent 10 surgeries during the fall, completely changing her look. (You can Google it later at your leisure cause it’s probably in the “NSFW” category :P ).

On that note, the “Fave Friday” topic of the day is: Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery (or maybe even a list of those who shouldn’t have gotten plastic surgery? 8) ). I know there are tons of ‘em out there, but the only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is: Barbra Streisand. I’ll leave the rest for you to list below. 8)

Others like DJ Qualls, Steve Buscemi, and former NBA star Sam Cassell qualify, but to me, they are quirky and endearing, and that “different” look is what makes them unique and stand out.

What I can’t stand is when a celebrity is obviously ugly, but yet arrogant and overconfident (i.e. Usher). I know, I know. I know nothing about him on a personal level and it’s shallow for me to come to a crass judgment based simply on what I see, but sorry Usher, you make the list. *grin*

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Usher

Wotchu tink?

Talk to me!
* What other celebrities/athletes would you like to see go under the knife.
* Am I the only one upset over NBC’s ridiculous buyout of Conan O’Brien? I am soooo boycotting Jay Leno now!
* Are you ready for some football? Who you rootin’ for this weekend? Jets, Colts, Vikings, or Saints? Wouldn’t a Colts/Saints Super Bowl be pretty nuts?
* What did you think of the NBA All-Star Voting results?
* Does anybody really care about Tiger Woods in the sex rehab clinic?
* Any A.I. (American Idol) chatter out dea?
* Gooooo Bows! Think they got a shot against #1 WAC ranked La Tech?

Shoots den! Have a great VH07V Friday and an even greater weekend. See you on da flip side! :)

Pants On the Ground

The real title was actually “Fave Friday: Comedians” for dis one, but I just had to… ;) (see bottom if you have no idea what I’m talking about).

In Wednesday’s blog, some of you peeps started talking about old school joints like Gems or Holiday Mart/Daiei, etc., and it made me want to blog about it. Unfortunately, I beat myself to the punch. LOL! Shmall kine forgot that I already did um befo’! *blush*

Instead, let’s do a somewhat newsworthy one. Comic legend Bill Cosby is in town for a couple of shows this weekend. Is he one of your faves? Let’s list ours up. Hurr’s mine:

* Jim Gaffigan – my all time favorite! Wifey bought us tickets when he came to town. HILARIOUS! He also seemed like a nice guy too when we met him to take photos after the show.
* Dave Chappelle – a close second! I would sooooo go watch him if he came here. I’m proud to say that I was his fan way before he blew up. 8)
* Ellen DeGeneres – smart, witty, and most importantly funny! Seems genuine too! Loves it!
* Chris Rock – edgy, funny, a little racist though. LOL! Love his comedy specials!
* Martin Lawrence – ditto the above. Wonder what he’s up to these days. Mah-innnn!
* Dane Cook – used to be one of my fave plays on my iPod. Popularity seems to have majorly plummeted(?)…
* Brian Regan – old school comic that used to make me laugh on Letterman.
* Paula Poundstone – another old school comic. Actually dragged some friends to go watch her when she was doing a show at Pipeline. LOL!

A shout out to our local comics too:

* Rap ReiplingerAuntie Marialani’s Cooking Show is an all-time classic!
* Andy Bumatai – All In the `Ohana still makes me crack up!!!
* Paul Ogata – my fellow Asian brutha!
* Frank DeLima – da originato!
* Augie T – nu skool (kinda)!
* Bu La`ia – wea he stay?
* Mel Cabang – old school, but still funny.

Need help? Check out this list from Wikipedia.

Tanioaka’s Interview
On a side note, I’m scheduled to meet with the good folks at Tanioka’s on Monday for a short interview for Part II of my up-coming “Poke Paradise” article (read Part I here). If you have any questions you’d like me to ask, lemme know! Also, if you have any suggestions on what poke you think I should try from there, let me know too!

Talk to me!
* Post your fave comic(s) below.
* Please help me congradumalate my sis for her good play at the Sony Open Pro-Am da odda day. She played with David Toms, and, from what she tells me, he’s a real southern gentleman type. Gotta love those celebs/athletes who keeps it real! Goooo David! (Read her blog about it here.)
* Again, if ya gots any questions you’d like me to ask to the Taniokas, holla!
* Any American Idol chatter out dea? I really liked Jermaine Sellers (for his voice), Skiibo Ski (for his personality), and most importantly, General Larry Platt (for his lyrical geniusness!).

Shoots! Have a great weekend y’all! See ya on the flipside!

Fave Friday: Slugs

January 8th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday

Whenever it rains near the crib, these crazy snails and slugs come out of the woodwork to greet me on the slime-filled sidewalk. I always think to myself, how sucky would it be to be a slug. You’re slimy, you’re super slow, you’re gross, nobody likes you, and you melt at the sight of the big, bad, evil, salt. Ooooooh!

No offense PETA, but I don’t like slugs and I definitely don’t wanna be one. Going through life as a slug must be pretty horrible. Can you think of anything worse?

I bet you not. In fact, I challenge you to think of something worse. Post your pick(s) below for your choice(s) as the worst animal/insect/bug evaaaar… and we’ll compare our slimy notes down below.

Have a great weekend y’all! :)

Fave Friday: Touristy Thangs

December 11th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Fave Friday, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA

Since my friends were in from outta town recently, I decided to take a vacation day the other day and tag along with them as they took care of some errands. We did some local kine stuffs (ate at Shige’s Saimin Stand in Wahiawa, and went to the swap meet), and we also did some touristy kine stuffs (checked out Dole Plantation, and went to the swap meet :P ), and actually had quite a good time playing tourist.

Amusing Graphic Tees at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet
Amusing Graphic Tees at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

Even though many of us have lived in the islands our entire lives, ain’t it still fun to hit up the north shore for some shave ice or stay at a hotel in “waiks” from time to time, just because? Why let the tourists have all the fun in this beautiful state we call home? Let’s list our fave things to do in the islands to “play tourist”. Who knows? Maybe some of you will even do a few of these this weekend. :) Hurr’s mine:

1) Travel to a neighbor island – OK, so technically, I actually AM a tourist when I travel outside of Oahu, but still, it’s fun, and yet, I still feel “local”, naw mean?
2) Show “real” tourists around – I get many visitors from the mainland as well as the muthaland, and there’s no greater joy I get from seeing their faces light up when I show them those great places to eat, drink and be merry!
3) North shore ack-shon – Growing up in town and east Oahu, the north shore was always so far for me that I rarely got to get out there (it was like going to another planet!). Whenever I hit up Haleiwa town or check out the shrimp trucks or get out to Laie side, it’s always new and fun.
4) Stay in Waiks – It’s always fun to feel how the tourists feel when they visit us.
5) Cruise Waiks – Just park anywhere in Waikiki (probably at the Zoo or along the Ala Wai) and walk up and down Kalakaua Ave (and/or Kuhio). Fun times!

So how do you guys play tourist? Post your thoughts in the comment area below!

Happy VHO7V Friday, and have a great weekend y’all! :) Shoots!

Fave Friday: Mate Traits

November 20th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Music

Kay, I’m gonna get shmall kine heat for this one from the fellas out dea, but since it’s one year anniversary time for yours truly and the lady friend wifey, here’s a mushy topic for us to chat about today (sorry boyz!). :P

There’s a new song out on the radio by former American Idol finalist Jason Castro called “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again” (see video and lyrics below). It’s pretty catchy and, dare I say, cute (*cringe*), but more importantly, the lyrics teach us a nice little lesson about love and how to keep that fire a burnin’ with your mate of many years.

We’ve probably got peeps up in hurr who’ve been married for decades, newlyweds, and even the singles (heyyyy!) looking for love, so along those lines, let’s post our favorite traits of our mates for a fun little Fave Friday listing.

To all y’all singles, your job is funner. List the traits you traditionally look for in a future mate. And fellas, please use “Pager Talk” like 58008 if you’re gonna be pervy! Ahahahaha! Nah! Let’s do this!

  1. Cute (inside and out) - I may’ve mentioned this before, but a wise man (my friend) once told me: “Pretty is temporary, cute lasts forever.” Word.
  2. Supportive – whatever I wish to pursue (Tin Man, getting my real estate license, interviews with celebs, etc.) she’s always so supportive.
  3. Down – is always up for something fun and spontaneous (sports, new restaurants, etc.) and rarely monkus about it. Game for almost anything, as long as it’s with me. Awwww.
  4. Tries Hard – no matter what it is, she tries her best to improve and impress.
  5. Well Liked/Lovable – whether it’s my friends, family, co-workers, etc., she can get along with any of ‘em. And they all loooove her. At least that’s what they tell me. :P

Now for the fun list. If I were to put myself in the place of a single person, I’d probably look for the following:

  1. Smile - shows that they’re nice (usually).
  2. Honesty – liars are out like trout.
  3. Genuine - can’t stand fakeness.
  4. Thoughtfulness – shows that they’re interested in you.
  5. 58008 – Bwahahahahaha! Sorry, I just had to.

So what about you bu? No be shame ’cause remember, this post is mushy to begin with. :P Post away!

Jason Castro – Let’s Just Fall In Love Again

Let’s pretend baby
That you’ve just met me
And I’ve never seen you before
I’ll tell all my friends
That I think you’re starin’
And you say the same to yours

And oh, we’ll dance around it all night
And then I’ll follow you outside
And try to open up my mouth
And nothing comes out right

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy
Who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

I’ll call you in three days
Not too soon, not too late
And I’ll ask your roommate if you’re home
You call me on Thursday
And we’ll hang out all day
Then fall asleep on the phone

And oh, I’ll hold your hand when we drive
And we’ll lose track of all the time
And we’ll tell everyone
That we ain’t never felt so alive

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

We’ll fall disgustingly fast
And we’ll stop hangin’ out with friends
And they’ll be so offended

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy
Who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

Let’s just fall in love again
So let’s just fall in love again

P.S. For anyone getting married soon, the song above is probably a cute little song for a wedding slideshow or the like. You heard it here first. You’re welcome! ;)
P.P.S. If you post something nice about your mate, and they give you a big fat smooch (or more?) as a result, you’re also welcome! :P

Happy VHO7V Friday! Have a good weekend y’all, and be sure to tell that special someone you love them! ;)

Fave Friday – Products To Die For

November 13th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Honolulu Advertiser Posts

Get it? To DIE for? Friday the 13th?

*waits a few seconds*

OK, so the correlation wasn’t that obvious, but what the hey, let’s have some fun (this beat is sick)!

So erry once in a while, this beautiful-gem-of-a-face (*barf*) gets a widdle flaw we like to call a pimple. Normally, I would just sit it out and wait ’til da buggah goes away. No problem.

Recently though, wifey introduced me to this gem-of-a-product (*no barf*) called On-the-Spot Acne Treatment from Neutrogena. Ever heard of/used it? At the first sign of a pimple (hummin’) comin’ atcha, you dab this stuff on it and poof, it disappears, mostly. Not too shabby if you ask me. They also have this one now called Rapid Clear, which is supposed to (I think) be newer/better.

Anybody else got any “to die for” products out there to share with the rest of us? It is Friday the 13th after all. ;)

Happy VHO7V Friday! Have a great weekend and I’ll see y’all next week!

P.S. If anyone wants 2 9th row tickets to tonight’s UH Bball game, comment “Go Bows!” below and they’re yours! I can’t make it. :( The only catch is that you gotta come getum from me cause I gotta work all day. 8) Shoots!

So by the time you read this, I will have probably picked up the new Motorola Droid phone with the rest of dem nerds early adopters. 8) I don’t think I’ve been thisexcited for something to come out since the original Nintendo (after playing Super Mario Brothers on the FamiCom in Japan)! LOL!

Yeah, yeah, it’s just a phone, and, YESH, I highly doubt that it’s gonna be the iPhone killer that they want it to be, but to me, it’s “the one”… at least I think so.

Fave Five Friday – Man Rules

October 23rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Fave Friday, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Jokes

Before our softball game last weekend, the team circled up and did a prayer. One of our teammates asked one of the new guys if holding hands was ok, and somebody else replied with “Yeah, just don’t interlock the fingers… Man Rule #3!”. Ahahaha! I thought that was pretty classic!

So it got me thinking. What other “Man Rules” do we have floating around out there? You know, dem rules that are unwritten and unspoken, but very well known.

Here are a few off the top of my head (and here are some I actually found from a previous post). Feel free to use the comment area below to add your own! :)

  • Beer and Poke, it’s what’s for dinner.
  • Boys don’t cry.
  • You are disowned if you don’t know how to change your own oil or change a flat tire.
  • Don’t watch sissy shows like The Hills. Oops! ;)
  • Shaving/grooming should only be done around your mouth area.
  • Man to man hugs should last no longer than 0.00001 seconds. :P

Any others out there? Feel free to be as creative as you can!

Shooots! Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a great (UFC 104) weekend and I’ll see ya next week!
