I’m Going Going Back Back to Kauai Kauai

August 13th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Travel

I know I know… It’s supposed to be Where in Hawaii Wednesday, but travel plans have changed things a bit for us this week. So sorry ah.

Like Biggie Smalls, I’m going going back back to Cali Cali Kauai Kauai (or LL Cool J’s Going Back to Cali, Cali, Cali, for you old schoolers :P ) from tomorrow and wanted to get some advice from you Kauai pros out there. Whether you travel there often, know a lot about there or are from there, holla atcho boy and tell a brutha where to go. I’ll be checking in on this blog during my trip so send some good kine, spontaneous fun and I’ll go check um out if can.

I’ve been, many times before (see my Kau Kau Kauai series here: Part I, Part II and Part III), but there’s always something fun and new to discover right? I’m particularly interested in EATS and fun kine activities, so lemme have it won’tcha?

P.S. You’ve wanted a challenge… Next week’s “Where in Hawaii” photo may very well be coming from the Garden Isle itself. Muhahaha!

Oh yeah, here’s the answer from last week’s contest. Congrats to kako mochi for the correct guess!

Açai in Ha-wa-ii - Part I

August 1st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Road Runner Hawaii Columns

With the hot summer months upon us, there’s no better way to cool off than with an ice cold, refreshing treat. And since we’ve already covered some of the more popular shave ice joints across the state why not go with the latest health trend in Ha-wa-ii… Açai!?

Açai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee), is a small, berry-like fruit that grows on the Açai Palm native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Most popular in Brazil (cumprimentos!), it is widely known to be an uber healthy superfruit, carrying with it powerful antioxidants, amino acids and essential fibers and fatty acids. Heck, Oprah even gives it the thumbs up, and we all know that her word is gospel. *grin*

Today, you can find Açai all over Hawaii (and the United States for that matter) in juices, frozen fruit bars, vitamin supplements, chocolates, and most commonly in frozen smoothies known as an Açai cup or bowl. This month, we’ll explore the places around Oahu that serve up this special treat. Excelente!

Blue Hawaii Lifestyle

Located on the second floor of the new Nordstrom wing of Ala Moana Center, this health specialty store doubles as a juice bar/café, serving packaged foods, coffees, teas, fresh-made juices and even books and music.

For $6.75, you can enjoy their Small Açai Bowl topped with bananas, berries, honey and granola ($8.75 for the regular size), which, incidentally is their number one seller.

Ed’s Tip: Unless you’re a monstah eater, a small bowl should suffice as a snack for two peeps.

IMG_6258.JPG
Small Açai Bowl topped with bananas, berries, honey - $6.75

The presentation was just as good as the taste. Loved the use of fresh fruits and their surplus of granola!

According to PR point person Matt Olson and founder/CEO Michael Zhang, Blue Hawaii LifeStyle plans to expand to mainland China by the fourth quarter of 2009. “Beginning in Shanghai’s Xintiandi Shopping Center, we will continue the expansion to Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, bringing our concept of the active, healthy lifestyle found here in Hawaii to a new demographic.”

A great way to start guys…

Diamond Head Cove Health Bar

This surf-vibed, smoothie/salad bar is located on Monsarrat Ave and features an assortment of smoothies, juices, salads and wraps.

IMG_6433.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar

Most of their ingredients are local, including the fresh fish used in their salad and wraps. They also serve traditional organic Hawaiian Awa, three types of Açai treats (which is why we’re here! :P ) and have live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

But enough about that… let’s get to the Açai baby! They have three of ‘em (two bowls and one smoothie), which includes the Da Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Granola & honey for $7.50), the Mana Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Blueberries, Granola, Beepollen & Honey for $9.25), and the Açai Smoothie (Açai Bananas, Strawberries, Mixberries for $7).

IMG_6434.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar inside menu

A slight word of caution. There may be some discrepancies between the menu outside and the menu inside (which I hope they’ve fixed by now), so inquire within. Based on what I read inside, I was hoping to get “Mixberries” with my Da Cove Bowl, but was disappointed when it didn’t have any. On the way out, I read the board outside which did not list any berry besides strawberries (twice!).

IMG_6439.JPG
Diamond Head Cove Health Bar outside menu

The presentation wasn’t the greatest, likely due to the mad rush (see below), but the taste was pretty good nonetheless. It probably could’ve used a little more granola and a little less honey though.

IMG_6444.JPG
Da Cove Bowl (Açai, Bananas, Strawberries, Granola & honey) - $7.50

Ed’s Tip: Try to avoid the peak times here. Besides the very limited parking situation outside, they can get really busy up in hurr. We came when there was a big crowd and a shift change taking place, so they actually forgot/misplaced our order. :(

Jamba Juice

And finally… what’s a discussion about Açai without a mention of the mother of all smoothie hotspots: Jamba Juice!?

IMG_6272.JPG
Jamba Juice Mililani

Introduced statewide right after Christmas last year, Jamba Juice’s Açai Cup is blended with pure Açai concentrate and soymilk, combined with bananas, strawberries and blueberries, and topped with organic granola and fresh bananas.

IMG_6273.JPG

Here’s a close-up of the actual Açai portion of the smoothie:

IMG_6278.JPG

Here’s the much prettier, PR version of the Açai Cup. Dayem, those photographers are gooood! :)

My first exposure to the sweet Brazilian treat was actually via Jamba Juice’s Açai Cup. After tasting the way the other places do it though, I’m secretly hoping that they start drizzling honey over the top of theirs one day. :)

Jamba recently added two new drinks to their “Meal in a Cup” lineup: the Hawaiian Açai Cup, which blends Açai concentrate, mangos and guava juice and topped with organic granola and fresh bananas (Sixteen $5.25/Original $6.25), and the Chunky PB ‘n Jamba, a thick blend of soymilk, vanilla yogurt, organic peanut butter, strawberries, blueberries & organic granola and then topped with more blueberries (Twelve $4.50/Sixteen $5.25).

2008-08_aihawaii1-011

The Hawaiian Acai is a spin-off of the original Acai Cup substituting guava juice and mangos instead of soymilk, blueberries and strawberries. The Chunky PB `n Jamba is a continuation to the delicious Chunky Strawberry which replaces the bananas with blueberries.

I know it’s not Açai, but since I got it recently, here’s a closeup of the Chunky PB ‘n Jamba FYI.

IMG_6373.JPG
Chunky PB ‘n Jamba closeup

Chunky Strawberry is the final “Meal in a Cup” drink in their arsenal. It blends strawberries, bananas, peanut butter, yogurt, soymilk, and organic granola and is topped with fresh bananas (Sixteen $5.25/Original $6.25).

Ed’s Tip: Stick with the traditional Açai Cup. My cubicle mate and I have both tried the Hawaiian Açai and though it’s good, we still prefer the original da bes’!

Since everyone’s probably already been to Jamba at least once in their lives, I had to inquire within to find a gem for you valued readers. One little undiscovered morsel that will come in handy next time we all go.

Enter Marketing Director Sheri Rigg. “One thing customers may not know is that ANY smoothie on the menu can be customized to their taste preferences, nutritional needs, etc. They can swap out fruits in the recipe, change the consistency of the smoothie (e.g. make it thicker), or add ingredients or nutritional boosts. All the new products mentioned above include organic granola made with flax and pumpkin seed. Customers really LOVE the granola and can top any smoothie with this granola or have it blended within to create a thicker consistency. Topping their favorite smoothie with additional fruit is also delicious!”

Sounds like a little “Have It Your Way” action if you ask me. Yes, I know that’s another company’s slogan, but you catch my drift. I think I’m gonna try that next time. I’m gonna customize my Açai cup with more blueberries, less strawberries. And maybe I’ll bring a bottle of my own honey. :)

Jamba Juice Hawaii
Numerous Locations (store locator)

Well, that’s it for part 1. Next month, we’ll hit up Lanikai Juice, Jewel or Juice and Wedding Café for more from the world of Açai in Ha-wa-ii. Adeus!

Back to the Work Grind Yo

July 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Many of us had the day off last Friday July 4th. The forward thinking (or lazy?) ones also took Thursday off to enjoy a scrumptious 4 day weekend. Were you one of the scrumptiously relaxed ones this weekend? If so, what did you do? Just chill or catch up on errands l’dat?

Isn’t it strange how that always happens? You take the day off to relax, but you end up running around like a chicken without a head.

That was me this weekend, but for the most part it was good kine (productive) stuffs. I passed my State Real Estate Licensing exam (woo hoo!), celebrated (and got a bit tipsy) by doing the pau hana and karaoke thang with the future brother and law and gang, got tanned (burnt actually) and spent quality time with the homies at Sandy Beach and then later to watch the fireworks off Maunalua Bay, bonded with the ‘rents, changed my oil, made the return to my softball team (and hit a grand slam to boot!), finalized (I think) a tuxedo style for the big dance, picked up 3 solid Reyn Spooner aloha shorts at the 20% off Ala Moana sale, and downed some Acai for my future article. *big breath* Whew!

Here are some of the photo highlights…

Hawaii Weddings Galore - A Look Back at Eight Hawaii Weddings in One Year

July 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Hawaii, Road Runner Hawaii Columns, Scenic

Since July 1, 2007 to the day, I’ve attended, count them: 8 weddings. That’s almost a wedding a month son! Is it something in the air, or is it just that all of my friends are at that “marrying age”? Ah, it’s probably a combination of both. Probably doesn’t hurt that there’s absolutely no “prettier” place to get married than right here in Hawaii.

With the big summer wedding season, as well as the day to my own, quickly approaching, I thought it might be nice to take a break from the food and festivities for a bit and take a look back at the weddings of the past year. Reminisce with me for a moment won’tcha?

Sunday, July 01, 2007 - Kirk and Wendy Izawa

This ceremony for my friends and co-workers took place on the rooftop of the Hawaii Prince Hotel. Unfortunately, there was a certain fainting spell that took place (we won’t mention any names) and we were unable to attend the reception, but here are a couple shots from the gorgeous ceremony.

I used to work at KHET Hawaii Public Television with Big E. I’m still amazed that after over 11 years, most of us staffers still hang out and see each other periodically. Welcome Honolulu Advertiser print readers. Since I’m apparently in the rail promotion area for the print publication today, I thought I’d feature one of my more popular (meaning I get 3 comments instead of the usual 2 :P ) blogs posts for all y’all new guests. It’s where I mysteriously go to some top secret location in this 808 state and snap a photo or two. Then, you smarty pants readers get to guess where the heck I am, based on the vague-ity (is that a word?) that is the photo. See past posts. Without further ado *drumroll* hurr we gooooo!

My buddy Tommy and his fiancee Magaret came down from Californ-I-A for our good friend Dicson’s (and Roda’s) wedding. Last night was their last night here, so in true, Hawaii fashion, we threw him a Pau Hana, BBQ style. Here are some scenes from the night.

Talk to me:

  • Gots any of your own BBQ stories to share?
  • Looking forward to a little 4th of July BBQ action?
  • I’m looking for a new and interesting recipe for BBQ-ing. I got the typical miso chicken, red wine steaks, etc. action. Anyone care to share their winnah recipe for me to sample? :)
  • Or, if you don’t BBQ, what’s the best potluck stuffs from around town to pick up? (e.g. kalbi from Gina’s, fried chicken from KJ’s, etc.). Where else?

P.S. This blog is scheduled to be featured in the rail promo area of tomorrow’s print edition. Be sure to pick one up so you can see my beautiful mug, er, see what exciting post I have lined up for you guys (online) tomorrow! Hint: “Where In Hawaii…” Yeah YEAH!

Pho Fantasy - A Tour of Hawaii’s Favorite Pho Restaurants

June 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Road Runner Hawaii Columns

One of the greatest things about living in Hawaii is the multi-cultural nature of just about everything. From families to friendships to food, we were born and raised in a place that taught us how to appreciate each other’s differences.

Nowhere is that more apparent in the cuisine we consume on a daily basis. Where else can you go to a potluck bbq/party and sample everything from around the world, from sushi, chow mein, kalbi, lumpia, to summer rolls?

Recently, we had the urge to grind the Vietnamese noodle delicacy called Pho (loosely pronounced “Fah”). Rather than board the first flight to Ho Chi Minh City, all we did was jump in the G-ride and drive to three popular stops on Oahu: Super Pho, Pho One, and Pho To-Chau.

Conveniently located off Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, Super Pho is a quick and easy way to get your Pho phix (fix). They stand alone for the best Pho in a town brimming with great places to eat (apologies to Hale Vietnam fans).

I’ve actually been here enough to even venture away from their signature pho.

Needless to say, the pho is a must have.

Another convenient place to get your pho phix is Pho One, off Kapiolani. They have an odd parking situation (shares it with an apartment building above), but once you get settled in, you feel comfortable, and ready for some pho action.

And then it comes!

YUM!

Probably the most inconvenient, but popular of the three is our next stop: Pho To-Chau Vietnamese Restaurant, deriving its name from the mother and father founders of the restaurant. Inconvenient as it may be (located off River Street on the very edge of Chinatown), they have a loyal following and always attracts a monstah line.

With reasonable prices ($6.50 for the extra large bowl) and a simple approach to ordering (just pick your size and contents), it’s easy to see why.

Since we had to wait in line for quite some time (even at 10:15AM!), we decided to make the most of our visit. We ordered their popular Café Sua Nong Hoac Da (French filtered Coffee with Condensed Milk) and So-Da Chanh Duong (Lemonade with Soda Water) to go along with our $3.75 Shrimp Rolls.

And then it was time. *duh-duh-DUH!* Time to have a taste of what this hype was all about. It didn’t disappoint.

Though everything was good, as expected, I’m not quite sure if it was finding-parking-in-Chinatown-and-waiting-in-a-long-line good, you know? I’d much rather conveniently stroll into Super Pho to get my phill. Ya pheel me?

Either way, I hope you enjoyed the Pho tour of Hawaii. Next up: Kalbi? :)

Colbie Caillat and Justin Young at Diversity Harmony Peace Event

May 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Music

Yesterday afternoon, local boy Justin Young joined platinum recording artist (and part-time Kauai resident) Colbie Caillat (”Bubbly,” “Realize,” “Magic”) on stage for the Diversity Harmony Peace event put on by the Na Lei Aloha Foundation at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel Hawaii Ballroom. It was a star-studded event that also included local artists Keola Beamer, Raiatea Helm, Amy Hanaialii, and more, and was a follow up to the previous day’s 10th Annual Lantern Floating event at Ala Moana Beach. Below are a few snaps from the event. Mahalo to Blaine Fergerstrom for permission!

Talk to me:

Do you love Colbie Caillat too? What’s your favorite song of hers? Shouldn’t a big record label give Justin Young a shot already!?

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? - May 19, 2008

I really have to think of a shorter, more catchier name for these posts. Biting “Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego” can only take me so far. :P In any case, here’s this week’s challenge.

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? - May 19, 2008

HINT: It is again, somewhere in town in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Tough one eh? Post your guesses now baby! :) (Answer to come on Friday!)

P.S. Don’t forget to catch BJ Penn on the Countdown to UFC 84 show on SpikeTV tomorrow night @ 5PM. See full MMA television schedule for May.
