September 4th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

This afternoon, the defending Superbowl Champ New York Giants host (Colt Brennan and) the Washington Redskins, a game that will kick off the 2008 NFL Football Season. Seventeen plus weeks of beer drinking, score checking, and overall lazy unproductive Sundays are on the horizon. Caaaaaaan yoooooouuuuu dig it?

And even though I still maintain that baseball is the greatest sport on earth (yes I’m one of the few), followed closely by MMA, and then basketball… football has found a soft spot in my heart. I could care less about rivalries or which teams perform well or even who will win the Super Bowl. For me, it’s all about who’s on my Fantasy Team(s)! What’s In a Name?

September 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA, Random

Recently, two professional athletes did the unthinkable and legally changed their names to their nicknames. MMA fighter Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver, to get around a WWE wrestler’s trademarked name, changed his legal name to War Machine. That showed ‘em.

Not to be outdone, NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson added “Ocho Cinco” to his name legally (a name that represents his jersey number).

What is this world coming to? Can you imagine if everyone started doing this!?

We’d have Icemen and Rampages and Buses and Fridges walking around.

What was your nickname growing up? If you could legally change your name to anything you wanted, what would you change it to?

I think I’d go with something like Brad Pitt or Flash Gordon… :P

You?

Have a great short week gangy!

Wedding Stamps

August 29th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Random

So yesterday I was assigned the task of picking up the femme-looking stamps from the Post Office. Our envelope was a bit heavier than the $0.42 standard, so I had to think on my feet and decide which $0.59 stamp (or combination) to get. A yellow heart, a sunflower or a picture of a ram. The guy in me wanted to go ram, but I made the smarter decision and went the safer route: yellow heart. *grin*

Did you fellas out thurr know that postage would cost so dang much!? WTH? Including the ones we needed for the insde, the grand total came out to $109.40. If it weren’t for the gas prices these days, I would’ve tried to save money by hand delivering every single invitation… and then waiting for the person to fill it out before leaving! Haha! OK, so I’m not that cheap, but seriously… over $100 just for postage? It’s a good thing we’re going Nu Skool and offering the option to email back their RSVP. This will save our guests gas money (to drive to the post office) and they can also use the stamp for something else.

One of my main goals is to try and do things different from what people are used to. Thinking outside the box as they say. I would list all the things we’ve done or will do, but I don’t want all y’all to be stealing the ideas before our big dance yo. Haha! We’ll save that for a future piece I guess.

Have a good weekend!

Fantasy Football Draft Results

August 26th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Events, Random

So we’re 4 picks away from completing our Fantasy Football Draft for this year.

Hallelujah!

There are 10 of us and it’s taking painfully loooong.

Since we couldn’t find a good time when all of us could meet up for a live, draft party, we decided to do the ol’ standy, the convenient method of drafting electronically. This year’s product of choice: a spreadsheet in Google Docs (where you can trash talk/chat right in the spreadsheet window… priceless!). Trouble is, many of us work or have a life on the weekends, so you end up getting lost in the draft process. The call or text message from the person drafting before you inevitably comes, and is followed by a “Wait what? What happened? Who got picked after me?”

This rigamarole repeats itself 18 times until the completion of the draft.

After my last pick, there was a defensive run in the 13th and 14th rounds: Brian Urlacher, David Harris, DeMeco Ryans, Kerry Rhodes, Jon Beason, Gibril Wilson, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Bob Sanders, and Kirk Morrison. I’ve always been a defense shmefense kinda guy once the top tier dudes are gone, so I went Warrick Dunn.

Stop laughing.

I figgah since my last 4 picks will be D, D, D, K (as it is every year), I might as well fill my last bench spot with a make or break type. Dunn’s back in Tampa Bay where he was a quality fantasy back, so perhaps something magical (or miraculous) will happen? :P

Here’s a breakdown of how my 2008 draft turned out so far. Gimme some feedback on my team. Be honest. Lemme have it. I can take it. I’m a man. But I won’t mind compliments either. Holla atcho boy!

(In a QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, Flex, Flex, Flex, TE, K, DEF, D, DB scenario)

QB
Donovan McNabb
Marc Bulger

RB
Brian Westbrook
Larry Johnson
Jonathan Stewart
Ronnie Brown
Ahmad Bradshaw
Warrick Dunn

WR
Andre Johnson
Torry Holt
Brandon Marshall
Bryant Johnson
Derrick Mason

TE
Tony Gonzalez

K
???

DEF
???

D
???

DB
???

P.S. I wouldn’t mind your choices for sleepers this year either… :)

Nose Hairs

August 12th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Continuing with yesterday’s delightful conversation, let’s talk nose hair.

As we get older, we not only lose the hair on our heads, but father time slaps us in the face two times and puts it back in places you’d never guess or prefer. The ear, the nose, the neck, the back… I can almost hear Khia’s song My Neck, My Back queuing up.

Thankfully (again), I’m not a very hairy fella so I don’t think I’d have the neck/back problem. The ears haven’t started yet either (if they ever will), but the nose hairs, like the hills, are alive with the sound of music.

Perhaps it’s me just being overly paranoid of visible nose hairs (it’s one of the first things I notice on other peeps), but I take my nose hair grooming seriously. I don’t want them to show, plus da buggahs tend to itch the insides pretty good if they get too long.

Grooming for me consists of a periodic snipping with those little scissors and a once in a while weed whack-like mowing of the whole yard with those electric trimmer-type deals. I know the hairs are there for a reason (right?), but sometimes I just get the urge to chop-chop and not have to worry about it for a few weeks, yahurrdme?

Talk to me!
* Am I the only one out there with this fetish/peeve?
* What are some of your rituals/secrets?
* Ladies, do these things bother you (nose/ear/neck/back hairs)?

Let’s Talk Hair

August 11th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Continuing the trend of learning a little too much about me (why stop now right? :P ), let’s talk about the mystery of hair. As we get older, we lose it where we’re supposed to have it and we gain it where it’s not supposed to be. Anybody every wonder why this is?

Thankfully, *knocking on wood* I’m still good up top. The dome is still vibrantly growing. But many peers my age and even those many years younger, are losing their blessed locks. Receding, bald spot in the back, and general thinning all ova. Is it hereditary? Is it diet? A lil’ bit o’ both? Something else? Any doctors out there? Holla atcho boy!

I’ve heard many theories, but the one I believe (somewhat) the most is the one that says it skips every other generation on yo momma’s side. You’re supposed to check back at mother dearest’s papa and if he’s healthy up top, then you’re all good in tha hood. Eating non-greasy foods and staying away from hats probably doesn’t hurt either.

But what about other theories? Type of shampoo you use? Staying out of the sun? Stress? Post what you’ve heard below so the pre-balding men of this blog can save themselves from damnation. ;)

Fave Five Friday - Guilty Pleasures

August 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Much love to C to tha G for this one, aka Chicken Grease. It’s a good one, even though I’m not sure if I can even think of 5 for myself. Haha! Anyway, how about it? Let’s celebrate Fave Five Friday together by posting your “Guilty Pleasures” list below! Holla!

  1. The Hills - the future brother in law gives me heat for watching this with the lady and his gf (while giggling in our pjs), but it’s pretty addicting now that I know the story behind these peeps. Haha!
  2. Flavor of Love - this show is such utter nonsense, but I love it! It’s sad/depressing that he (supposedly) won’t be doing any more.
  3. Toppo - you know that stick like snack from Japan filled with chocolate in the middle? Mmmmm!
  4. Dixie Chicks - I actually dig on country music in general. Yee haw!
  5. Boxer Briefs - Not even sure if this counts as a guilty pleasure, but cut me some slack, I’m reaching here. Hehe! Anyway, no to boxers and a hella no to tighty whiteys (sp?), so where better to settle than in between? Comfort with support. Loves it!

Well, there you have it. Way more of me than you cared to know. Don’t leave me hangin’ and make me look like the only crazy one out thurr. Spill the beans yo!

Have a nice weekend y’all!

P.S. In other news, ex porn queen Jenna Jameson is reportedly preggers from boyfriend and MMA fighter Tito Ortiz. I’ll bite my tongue and leave the smart comments to you folks… Also, Ortiz has reportedly signed with Affliction and may be on their October card FYI. Thoughts?

Brett to Jet Set

August 7th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Dammit!

I had this quirky lil’ blog post about Brett Favre set to publish tonight at midnight, and then he had to go and get traded. Ruin my whole post why don’t you B Fav? Now I gotta pretty much re-write the whole thing in the present tense so I don’t sound like an out of it sports guy. Oh well, at least I’m near a computer tonight where I can edit this buggah to da max.

What am I babbling about? After months of back and forth, the Green Bay Packers finally sent Brett Favre a packin’, in a trade to the New York Jets.

Woah.

What does this mean exactly? Well, curtains for Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens for one. For another, we’ll no longer associate B Fav (you heard that nickname here first… don’t touch! :P ) entirely with the Kaimuki High like, green and gold/yellow. He’ll still be donning green, but in a darker shade with white.

How did we get to this point?

…after B Fav all but retired after last season via a teary-eyed press conference? Well, he decided that retirement was not for him. I can kinda see/empathize with both sides:

* Green Bay: They’ve drafted and made roster moves, thinking Brett wasn’t going to be a part of their future. They’ve got a young stud Quarterback in Aaron Rodgers whom they’d like to get a good look at before deciding his contractual future. They’re just trying to move on.

* Brett Favre: He’s a competitor. He’s still got the itch. He knows he can still compete at this level.

Talk to me!

  • Who you siding wit’?
    • For me, I kinda side with the Packers on this one. I’m all about being a man of your word and doing what you say you’re going to do, so it’s hard for me to side with Brett.
  • Thoughts on seeing Favre in a Jets uni?
    • I’m neither a Packers or a Jets fans, so I look at it from a strictly Fantasy Football point of view. The idea of having Brett Favre on my fantasy roster instead of duds Chad Pennington and/or Kellen Clemens, is pretty scrumptious if you “axe” me. Wide Receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery (and even TE Chris Baker and RB Thomas Jones for that matter) get a big boost as well. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. *rubs hands together*
  • For the ladies who read this blog… Is Brett Favre still a hottie to you?
    • Guys don’t look at other guys like that.

Hopefully, there are some sports/football nuts out thurr who will comment/discuss this below for poor, lonely me… Hollaatchoboy! *grin*

Portuguese Bean Soup Weekend

August 4th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Food, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

After watching an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I got inspired to give this cooking thing a try. Cooking, like real estate, is one of those things I feel I would be good at if I gave it a go. You know how you just have that feeling? Anyway…

After scooping a top secret(?) Portuguese Bean Soup recipe from a couple of co-workers (mahalos to Matt and Lance!), the lady and I took it (and the “ingredaments”) to the parentals’ crib yesterday afternoon to try it out. They summoned me to help them set up their wireless network, so in exchange, I “borrowed” their pots, pans and electricity to do the deed. :P

It got rave reviews, but I’d still like to perfect it, especially the process. Buggah took hours upon hours to finish. *sigh*

Now I know I can’t get outta here without sharing the recipe and/or some shots of the dish, so I will duly oblige. But since I don’t know how top secret the co-workers’ recipe is, I’ll protect my life and type up a generic one modified from a recipe the lady has in a book.

1-2 pounds smoked ham hock
2 cans kidney beans
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
3 cans beef broth
2 cans tomato sauce
3 large potatoes, cut into cubes
4 carrots, cut into cubes
1 Portuguese sausage
1 head cabbage

(In the voice of Aunty Marialani) In a large pot, place the ham hocks, kidney beans, garlic and onions, and cover with water. Simmer for approximately 2 hours (skim off fat while cooking). Pull out ham hocks, strip meat off bones, and replace in pot. Dispose of bones. Add the rest of the ingredients (except cabbage) and simmer for 1-2 more hours. Add cabbage and cook until soft and part of soup. Optionally: add elbow macaroni.

The ingredaments for step 2
The “ingredaments” for step 2

Photo of soup cold (yeah, I forgot to take it hot)

Talk to me:
* Any tips or secrets on how to make your Portuguese Bean Soup a winnah?
* Any recipes of your own to share for the married couple to be?
* How did you spend your weekend?

Have a happy Monday y’all!

Mario Kart Me!

August 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

You’ve seen ‘em errwhere. From lil’ kids to full-blown adults. Staring mightily and intently into the little Nintendo DS screen.

Depending on your age and level of pop culture expertise, some of the questions you may’ve asked yourself were:

* “What is that… a cell phone?” (old as dirt)
* “What are they doing?”(slightly younger but still out of it)
* “Should I have one of those to?” (a little more downtown julie brown)
* “What Multiplayer Group are they in and I wonder if I can join in!?” (hip and in the know)

The game is Mario Kart and it’s the fastest growing sensation in Hawaii, well, at least in my experiences. Different groups of my friends do it. Random people I talk to do it. Readers of this blog do it! I’ve finally come to this realization when (as I mentioned in a previous post) a random guy in the movie theater yelled to the crowd to join his Mario Kart Multiplayer Group, and, you know what, people did! To illustrate just how amazing this is, quite a few things have to be in place for this to even come close to happening.

  1. They had to have brought their DS
  2. They had to have had the game Mario Kart
  3. They had to have had some level of knowledge of a) how to play the game and b) how to connect to another DS via Multiplayer mode

Simply amazing. Next time I go to the movie, I’m packing my DS just in case. :P

New welcome screen means I play too much!
New welcome screen means I play too much!

Talk to me!
* Which character/kart combo do you like to use?
* Know any shortcuts?
* Know any secret codes/cheats?
* Care to share any other secrets to help me get better?
* What other games do you like to play on your DS?

Shoots! Have a happy Sunday yo!

Those who frequented Slammers for the past 3 years, came for one last night of drinks and good times. See the scenes below. Go and support Kanpai Bar & Grill when they re-open k? They are currently targeting early September.

Photos for the Slideshow?

July 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

It was recently suggested by C. (to-tha) G. that I talk more about the wedding stuffs since I am (as many of you may be) going through it at this very point in my life. So I thought I’d feel all y’all out and give it a try.

As somewhat of a computer guy, now is the time when things start getting interesting (I’ll explain below). We’re down to the wire, and up until now, I’ve pretty much been a spectator/supporter. The lady has been taking on a lot of the load (props to her!). Things like flowers, centerpieces, her wedding dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, cake selection, tsuru (crane) folding, etc. I’m your typical guy: “anything is fine.” (Notice how I didn’t say “I don’t care” future husbands to be? *grin*)

In any case, why am I now starting to pay attention? It’s getting to the juicy portion of the show. With a decent amount of computer skills, I can come in handy when it comes to things like the customization of the invitation, or the slideshow. Verrrry interesting. *rubbing hands together*

Hence this post.

How does one narrow down the photos for the slideshow?

I was told that 30 per section is the norm:
* 30 for you (which includes individual shots growing up, with friends and with family)
* 30 for the lady (ditto)
* 30 together

How the heck?

With this age of digital photos, I must have like a billion photos to choose from for the slideshow. It doesn’t help that I’m a slight (ok mayjah) ham when it comes to making faces in photos. And since the idea is to entertain your guests with funny/memorable photos, how on earth are you supposed squeeze these in?

Talk to me!
* Anybody have any tricks up their sleeves on how to select the right photos?
* Got any funny wedding slideshow stories to share?
* Got any wedding slideshow horror stories to share?
* As guests, what kinda photos do you like to see?

Help a brutha out! Or the following may have to make the cut! :P

FREE Movie Pass Giveaway: Pineapple Express - WINNER!

July 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Congratulations goes to liane for being the lucky winner to my FREE Movie Pass Giveaway: Pineapple Express contest for her hilarious stoner story.

i never got stoned, but my friend did when she was in high school… she did it that one time and never again since. five years later, i’m pregnant at her house and dying for snack. and i find brownies she made. knowing she hasn’t done weed in YEARS, i still was ultra paranoid to eat them, more so because i was pregnant and didn’t want to have stoner baby. i spent 20 minutes trying to wake her up to find out if the brownies had weed in them. she thought i was crazy and ON WEED myself to even believe that she would make those kinds of brownies. i thought she was on weed b/c it took me 20 minutes to get a straight answer out of her. it got to a point where i was yelling, “is there weed in the brownies!!! i’m hungry for a snack but i don’t want to get high!!!” maybe that’s lame, but it was hilarious to me.

She joins JMAW and Miss Pris as the 3rd winner to these oh so exciting giveaways:

Please help me congratulate liane y’all!

Oooh, is tomorrow Where in Hawaii Wednesday awwwready? *grin*

Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they’re not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia; incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the Pineapple Express.
