Bag Ladies

September 13th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

In a convo with a couple of lady friends at work the other day, the topic of shopping bags came up. As I rolled my eyes, sighed, and looked at my watch a few dozen times, they gossiped away on the intricacies of these bags. Pshaw, as if there were any intricacies to talk about. Ain’t it just about holding thangs? They edumacated this apparently clueless boy…

It all started when Erin brought 3 parasols (for me to take home to the woman) in a larger than life Sephora bag. I swear it was big enough for 20 parasols. Honestly, for a second there, I thought she was just trying to embarrass me because it was so ridiculously HUGE. I soon realized that it wasn’t a joke and that I should’ve been grateful to her for sacrificing one of her favorite bags for/on me.

One of the many... *sigh*
One of the many… *sigh*

Diane chimed in, “Yeah, don’t you know how important bags are?”

As they continued to gossip about bags and make their rather odd fetishes for them apparent, I wondered off in my own head as their voices turned into Charlie Brown’s teacher.

Suddenly, it hit me. This HAS to be a blog post. I’ve gotsta put this to a vote to all y’all to see if these two women are just crazy bag ladies or if I’m just an oblivious guy.

I mean the lady saves and organizes bags at our crib, and, I guess, now that I think about it, mamasan saves bags she gets from Japan, so there could be something to it, but really, isn’t a bag just a bag?

Erin and Diane continued… even emphasizing the importance of the handle (material, length, etc.), and how big and how fashionable the bag itself was. If one was “ugly,” it would go right inside the “prettier” (and I quote) bag. *rolling eyes*

If there really was some “trufe” to this, and I were in charge of marketing for a store, you can bet I would pimp out our line of bags to encourage more foot traffic. The handle would be covered with moisturizing lotion, made of soft, furry velvet and long enough for some over-the-shoulder action. The bag itself would be large (and in charge) and would be covered in glittery rhinestones or sparkly diamonds. That’s right, other stores… Don’t hate! Inside, there would be multiple pouches for phones, makeup stuffs, keys, and those other mysterious things you hold, and to top it all off, there will be Big LVs or Cs all ova the outside. Shmall kine copyright infringement, but what the h*ll. :P

But why stop there? I’ve already got the “bag lady” market cornered! I would next go for the man bag population, son! This would bring an entirely new demographic into to my awesome store. These disposable murses would have rough leather or rope/lasso handles, connected to weighted dumbbells. Inside, there’d be an area to spit our tobacco and store our goatee grooming comb. There’d be a butterfly knife pocket for good measure. On the outside, there’d be imagery like a skull and crossbones or some athlete or sports car. And to top it off, there’d be real chest hair glued on the back. Oh yeah!

*POOF*

OK, maybe not. Go ahead, we’ll let you ladies have the bag market. I’ll be perfectly fine if a store gave me a garbage bag to lug my stuff home in. As long as da buggah holds up ’til I get home. Maybe I’ll keep that one until Erin or Diane needs something from me… ;)

Da Bag Ladies Erin and Diane
Da Bag Ladies Erin and Diane

Talk to me!
* Are you a bag lady? Why?
* Is your woman a bag lady?
* Are you a bag man? Why?
* Name the stores that have your favorite bags! I know ya got um! :)

Bye Bye Brady

September 9th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Gossip, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

As many of you probably already know, Tom Brady, the New England Patriots’ dreamy quarterback, is done for the year. In the first quarter of the first game of the year, he injured his knee (ACL/MCL) when Kansas City’s Bernard Pollard hit it from an odd angle as he was throwing. And don’t think I’m getting soft on you by using the word “dreamy.” Hehe. In addition to being a looker for the ladies out there (ladies, lemme hear ya…Heeeeey!), he’s also dreamy in the eyes of us manly men *grunt* because of the kind of fantasy numbers bruddah puts up.

In this year’s Fantasy draft, I was *THIS* close to picking him up in both leagues. Last seasons, he was a fantasy football manchild and to have a quarterback on your team of that caliber is, well, dreamy. Fortunately, Brian Westbrook fell to me in both drafts so I went for him instead. Thankfully so… So far, so good *knock on wood*

Talk to me!
* Fellas, post your favorite Tom Brady related Fantasy Football story, good or bad, OR…
* Fellas, post the injury to a player that affected you the most, fantasy or otherwise.
* Gals, do you think Tom Brady is a looker? Post your reasons below.
(see I don’t discriminate! ;P )
* Anyone out there ever have an ACL injury before? I’ve been lucky to escape that one all these years, but it sounds pretty wicked.

P.S. A moment of silence please for Reid-o and Alfredo Pasta who drafted Brady in the fantasy leagues I’m in. *evil grin* My team is soooo gonna get batchi now. :P

EATS! - Poke Monday

September 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Honolulu Advertiser Posts, Random

Last Monday, I was lucky enough to buy fresh ahi from a friend’s fishing expedition. Since it was sold to me at such a good price, I thought I’d spoil myself (and others) by making poke out of the entire 2-3 pounds; something I’d never even consider doing at regular prices.

I’m not much of a chef (YET!), but I’d like to think that limu poke is my bag baby. You see, I used to work as a “Fish Cutter” (yes, that’s the official title of those peeps) for Safeway, and my poke was da bomb yo. Hehe. Of course that’s just my opinion, but it sure was a good feeling when customers would only buy if I was the one who made the current batch. 8)

Anyway, since the last post about poke was a hit (at least by WWE standards), we’re testing the waters again with another poke post. This time with shots of my poke making process. Hope y’all enjoy!

What’s In a Name?

September 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Honolulu Advertiser Posts, MMA, Random

Recently, two professional athletes did the unthinkable and legally changed their names to their nicknames. MMA fighter Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver, to get around a WWE wrestler’s trademarked name, changed his legal name to War Machine. That showed ‘em.

Not to be outdone, NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson added “Ocho Cinco” to his name legally (a name that represents his jersey number).

What is this world coming to? Can you imagine if everyone started doing this!?

We’d have Icemen and Rampages and Buses and Fridges walking around.

What was your nickname growing up? If you could legally change your name to anything you wanted, what would you change it to?

I think I’d go with something like Brad Pitt or Flash Gordon… :P

You?

Have a great short week gangy!

Açai in Ha-wa-ii - Part II

September 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Hawaii, Road Runner Hawaii Columns

And… I’m spent!

Ho, for you guys, I travel the globe (State actually) and boy are my arms tired. Yeah, bad joke. But seriously, I do this to bring all y’all the best in Hawaii’s eats. You’re welcome! ;P

I actually don’t mind it at all though. Me loves to eat, travel, take photos and write, so as you can guess, this combination is right up my alley. The last two months of stuffing my face with Açai was actually a nice little treat to my tummy. So I, instead, thank YOU. :)

With that longest-intro-in-history out of the way, let’s get going shall we?

Lanikai Juice

Located in the Kailua Shopping Center in the heart of Kailua town, this smoothie joint has been a long time favorite of many Kailuans. Eventually, word got out and its popularity now stretches further than 96734.

My softball team conveniently has its games at nearby Kailua District Park, so before a game last month, I stopped by to see what all the fuss was about.

IMG_6486.JPG
Lanikai Juice Sign

With young, vibrant girls working the counter and a clean, colorful interior, it wasn’t hard to figure out the lure.

IMG_6489.JPG
Inside Lanikai Juice

I got the standard Açai Bowl, plopped myself on a stool outside and took in the fresh Kailua air as I enjoyed my treat.

IMG_6492.JPG
Açai Bowl - Açai, strawberries, blueberries, banana and apple juice, topped with organic granola and sliced bananas - $5.85

Optionally, you can ask for honey (yes, it doesn’t come standard), but it’ll cost ya an extra $0.52. Here’s what it looks like with honey, honey.

IMG_7166.JPG

The Açai portion of their bowl has an icy flavor reminiscent of shave ice, but it was filling nonetheless. The perfect amount to energize me for my game.

The Wedding Café

You would never have guessed that our next stop would be a place in Ha-wa-ii for Açai, but that’s what we’re here for: To turn over every leaf out dea for you. :)

IMG_6591.JPG
Açai Bowl outside The Wedding Café

Tipped on by the lady, after one of her many research driven trips there, the Açai Bowl is a pleasant surprise in a place that is supposed to otherwise be scary for us men.

All kidding aside, the Wedding Café at Ward, not only serves as an all-in-one, wedding research superstore, but they also serve up some good kine grinds while you’re there.

In addition to their Açai Bowl, some of their other must-tries, according to co-owner Tanna Dang, include the chicken walnut sandwich, the Lychee iced tea and of course their Pumpkin Crunch.

But why Açai?

Dang explains, “We all LOVED the freshness and healthiness of Açai!! It’s seriously ADDICTING… It’s a great meal alternative and SO yummy after a good surf session or workout.”

You be the judge…

Kalypso Island Bar & Grill

Not to be outdone, the peeps of Kauai got a go-to bar up north that serves up some mean Açai. Hanalei’s Kalypso Island Bar & Grill is the place.

On a recent trip to Hanalei, we noticed that it always seemed crowded at Kalypso’s. Knowing that the best way for eating success is to follow the crowds, we asked around. It turns out that they have great food to go along with a great vibe, and they serve Açai to boot. We immediately knew where we were heading for breakfast the next morning.

Though we ate a mean blackened mahi mahi benedict, we’ll save that for a future article. Today, it’s all about the Açai, and Açai we did a try-ee.

Since you can’t really get a good glimpse of the Açai portion of the bowl, let’s mix things up and give y’all a look at the inner-workings.

Yes, we were hungry...
Yes, we were hungry…

$7.95 was a bit costly for what we got, but it was great to sneak in an Açai fix outside of Oahu.

Jewel or Juice

IMHO, we’ve saved the best for last.

Right on the corner of Waialae Ave and Koko Head Ave, this half jewelry, half juice joint (hence the name) is an absolute must. And though they do feature jewelry from one artist (Flora Lu from Lucoral Museum), their forte is obvious: it’s the Juice!

IMG_7165.JPG
Jewel or Juice on the corner of Koko Head and Waialae

The lady and I actually had the darndest time trying to get here, as our “going to town for errands” day is usually Sunday, the day they just so happen to be closed. On the 3rd attempt, we were finally able to crash the Jewel or Juice party, and boy are we glad we did.

IMG_7163.JPG
Inside Jewel or Juice

Ever since graduating with a business degree from HPU, it has always been a dream of owner Chris Chan to open a unique store like this with personality. With the help of family and friends, including brother and partner Alec, Jewel or Juice has been flourishing now for 3 successful years.

According to Chan, their Warrior Bowl is the best seller.

“Most people mistaken the Warrior Bowl as another Açai Bowl with different toppings. In fact, it is a special blend that is remarkably refreshing. Most customers find it addicting and comes everyday for it.”

IMG_7147.JPG
Yes, this idiot author did not order the best seller… YET!

The quality in the ingredients they use is evident. And the passion these brothers have for perfecting their business is obvious. It honestly makes you want to return just to support this enthusiasm.

Deluxe Açai Bowl - Açai blends w/strawberry, banana, and apple juice, topped with bananas, seasonal fresh berries, Goji berries, honey & organic granola - 16 oz.: $6.99, 24 oz.: $8.25

IMG_7158.JPG
Close-up of Deluxe Açai Bowl toppings (strawberries, blueberries, Goji berries and bananas)

In my email interview with Chris, he displays this fervor by teaching me how to make a quality Açai Bowl.

“My opinion for a good Acai Bowl, just for reference…. since you are writing about it

  1. Make sure there is no Ice Cube Added. It dilutes the flavor and gives it a blank taste
  2. No ‘previously frozen’ fruit topping is acceptable. If you promise ‘Fresh’, it better be fresh!
  3. The Açai blend cannot be ‘running’, it has to ’stand up’ tall in the bowl.
  4. Açai Juice vs. Açai Berry Puree is a big difference. Juice is weaker than Puree for sure
  5. The granola has to be Organic and Flavorful. Not too soft and not too hard.
  6. If honey is used, make sure it is pure honey, not honey flavored syrup
  7. Açai Bowl cannot be pre-made, it has to be made in front of your eyes, your ears and your nose”

If it tastes anything like the one we tried at Jewel or Juice, you can bet I’ll be following intently from 1 through 7…

Wedding Stamps

August 29th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Random

So yesterday I was assigned the task of picking up the femme-looking stamps from the Post Office. Our envelope was a bit heavier than the $0.42 standard, so I had to think on my feet and decide which $0.59 stamp (or combination) to get. A yellow heart, a sunflower or a picture of a ram. The guy in me wanted to go ram, but I made the smarter decision and went the safer route: yellow heart. *grin*

Did you fellas out thurr know that postage would cost so dang much!? WTH? Including the ones we needed for the insde, the grand total came out to $109.40. If it weren’t for the gas prices these days, I would’ve tried to save money by hand delivering every single invitation… and then waiting for the person to fill it out before leaving! Haha! OK, so I’m not that cheap, but seriously… over $100 just for postage? It’s a good thing we’re going Nu Skool and offering the option to email back their RSVP. This will save our guests gas money (to drive to the post office) and they can also use the stamp for something else.

One of my main goals is to try and do things different from what people are used to. Thinking outside the box as they say. I would list all the things we’ve done or will do, but I don’t want all y’all to be stealing the ideas before our big dance yo. Haha! We’ll save that for a future piece I guess.

Have a good weekend!

Google Auto-Complete

August 28th, 2008 | 6 Comments | Posted in Computers & WWW

Since I’m like, in the industry, and the title of this blog is “World Wide Ed” for Pete’s sake, I thought I’d post a computer/web related post for the first time in months/years. (Sorry, the Hawaii/food/travel related stuff is so much more fun! :P ).

Recently (or coincidentally after I cleared my browser cache for the first time in years *blush*), Google activated their Auto-Complete feature to the general public on search terms entered into the search box on Google.com. It’s nuthin’ new. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts have been using tools like this to optimize their sites with relevant keywords. But it’s interesting to play with don’tcha think?

Try it yourself! Go to Google.com and enter any search term you desire. Suddenly it starts to sense what you’re typing and attempts to auto-complete your phrase, complete with how many sites/results there are out there based on that search string.

Naturally, I had fun with “hawaii” and took a screen cap of it. Check it out yo!

Google Auto-Complete for hawaii
Google Auto-Complete for “hawaii”

Talk to me!
* Is this helpful for you? Annoying?
* Isn’t Google just insane/amazing?
* Why aren’t you commenting sum’more! ;)
