To all the WWE ladies up in hurr… HAPPY GIRLS’ DAY (Hinamatsuri)! I bet some y’all fellas forgot. That’s why I’m here. I take kea. And now, on to our regularly scheduled programming…

Ho, rayboyjr is going all nuts! He got his 8TH WIH correct guess in a row last week (albeit with a 0.5 point doozy ), and made history yet again. Bruddah Takeshi made it two weeks in a row with his two point Google Map gem, and Coconut Willy almost had a clean sweep with 5 total correct guesses. And guess who the Top “tree” WIH leaders are? Fave Friday – Hawaii Chefs

I know, I know, there are not many to choose from, in terms of really well-known chefs from Hawaii. Let’s see, off the top of my head, we got the big dogs like Roy Yamaguchi, Alan Wong, Sam Choy, Russell Siu, Chai Chaowasaree, Chef Mavro (George Mavrothalassitis), etc., and some of the lesser known, but equally impressive, like Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi, Collin Nishida and Onjin Kim (anybody know what happened to her btw?).

In the comment area below, list your favorite Hawaii Chef(s) and why. Whether it be their cooking ability, ono-ness of their restaurant, their personality, or all of the above. I have a few for various reasons:

Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi: He’s the co-owner of Tokkuri-Tei, my all-time favorite restaurant, hands-down. He’s down to earth and has a hilarious sense of humor. Santa always makes me crack up without even saying a word.
Chuck Furuya: Yeah, he’s not really a chef, but close enough. He runs Vino Italian Tapas & Wine Bar in Restaurant Row, and, oh by the way, is one of only two Master Sommeliers in the state of Hawaii. He’s genuine and friendly and has a knack for taking the intimidation out of wine. Back in college when I worked at KHET Hawaii Public Television, we filmed a segment with him for one of our shows. During setup, he yells to this little student grunt (me) across the room and says “Eh, I know you! I played ball with you in Hawaii Kai the other weekend! Remember me?” Stunned, I was like “Huh!?” Then I realized he was talking to me and was able to muster up this glorious response: “Me? Oh yeah!” We continued to shoot segments with him and he would always take the time to make conversation with all of us about anything and everything. Recently, I saw him with his son at Cafe Laufer and he still recognized me and shook my hand. What an awesome guy!
Sam Choy: just seems really friendly and welcoming. Plus, he loves him some poke. My kinda guy!
Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong: though insanely intimidating, these two guys seem warm hearted in person and continue to stay true to their roots, choosing to buy local whenever possible. My “claim to fame” for Roy Yamaguchi was that I gave him a ride to and from Roy’s Hawaii Kai – in my little Civic hatchback – before and after a shoot in our KHET studios (I lived in Hawaii Kai at the time and it was looked at as a better, more economical idea than sending a production van out to Hawaii Kai to pick him up). My “claim to fame” for Alan Wong was actually a few days ago when I interviewed him for Part II of my “Poke Paradise” series for AroundHawaii.com, set to be published on February 1st. Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – December 23, 2009

OK, OK… as we approach Christmas (just two days away!), the holiday spirit is finally hitting me. So even though I was supposed to join the rest of y’all on holiday hiatus, I thought I’d entertain the few of you who are still checking in with this Christmasy-themed Where In Hawaii. Enjoy!

Last week, bruddah kuya.d crept up to 3rd place on da leadahboard by correctly guessing Toshi’s Delicatessen. That gives him back to back wins and puts him in position to be the first for the turkey. Congrats dewz!

This week, we got some animation ack-shon goin’ on again. It’s a festive Christmas tree from bottom to top. Too bad for you, I cropped out most of the background. Muhahahaha! 8)

I’m pretty excited today. Not so much for anything other than the promise of this post’s potential comment count.

You see, if history is any indication, the Japanese food shots tend to get a lot of action comin’ in from da regulars and lurkers alike. On top of that, this Hawaii restaurant is not exactly a “mainstream” one. Combine that with the fact that the dish looks it could be from anywhere, and we’ve got the perfect storm. Record-breaking comment count hurrr we come! Muhahaha!

OK, I know somebody will probably get it early and burst my bubble, but a fella can dream right? In the meantime, please help me congratulate da 4 winnahz from last week (kuya.d and snow with 2 points a piece, and Coconut Willy and rayboyjr with 1.5 points a piece). I kinda like this multi-point per week scoring action. Congrats!

Thanks to hemajang’s generosity (with his submitted photo) and the Veterans Day holiday, it’s been almost a month since I’ve had to go through my archives to hunt for a WIH worthy photo. Wow, has it really been that long?

MakiSushi was on the verge of making WIH history by pulling off the back-to-back-to-back turkey, but was stumped with my Maui photo (sorry Maks! ). Local girl NeedaHobby, however, repped it valley style, and won with her Papalaua Beach Park guess on the wessssssiiiiiide of da island!

Fun Day Monday: Serious Grindage

OK, so for those of you who don’t know, today marks the start of Restaurant Week Hawaii, where restaurants from around Oahu create menus at special rates and donate a portion of their proceeds to benefit the development of The Culinary Institute of the Pacific. It’s from today (11/16) through Sunday (11/22) and for a good cause so get out dea and support our local businesses k?

On another note, some of you may’ve heard that the lady friend and I will be celebrating our one year wedding anniversary soon. (and noooo! that’s not what I meant by “Serious Grindage” you pervs! :P ) I will be taking her to _______ (shh! even SHE doesn’t know yet! ), but could use some additional suggestions and tips on where to take her and what to get her. Sorry, I’m a guy.
